i believe that Jack Purcell was a badminton player
and converse designed the shoe for him or something like that.

The Jack Purcell sneakers/shoes were designed by himself for B.F. Goodrich after his retirement. The shoes were said to be badminton specific shoes, providing better protection and comfortability during play.
Later on, Converse bought the rights and started producing them for their own collection, but now more as a casual sneaker.

I wouldn't recommend using them for badminton, to be honest. I had a pair last year. They don't give a lot of support to the feet, and aren't as comfortable as today's badminton specific shoes. I gave them a go on the badminton court once, just to try and have a sense of that authentic oldschool feel Purcell himself would have liked. But it was quite horrible..
