It was a curious match insofar that Momota looked in better shaped than against Gemke and really played fast, attacking badminton in game 2. Scored lots of smashes as well. You could see in some movements that he is still drained, but especially the second game suggest that he might actually make the final.

Gotta love Blunderama. He's never there when needed for Japan, losing to Li Shi Feng and Brian Yang at the TC, but he sure is good at profitting from the fact that Momota basically has to play all games for Japan that remotely matter. As a nice "thank you", he takes great care to smash every net kill straight into Momota's face while smiling like a kid. Top bloke!

To be honest, this is also dumb by Momota. He should just have stood there for one more game.

Not if advised not to do so by Nakanishi.

Clever man there in the coaching staff. This is the worst possible outcome.
All the effort, all the fight from Momota for absolute nought. For nought, except for a potential injury and the loss of the ranking points and prize money. Oh yes, and honour.
I'm sure Axelsen will be thinking fondly about Kento Momota's "honour" when he's hoisting the WT trophy and cheque.

Edit: As you can tell, I'm seething.:D

Due to Gill's comments, I couldn't hear what Nakanishi said to Momota. I decided to switch to JSports to see if there was more luck to be had there. Again, the conversation was mostly inaudible, but when Momota voiced his concern over the points, Nakanishi seemed to assure him that there would be no problem, and encouraged him to quit. The assumption was that he would not lose his points. This content was repeated by the programme commentators.

Assured that he would keep his points, Momota opted to retire.

Momota right now seems to seek matches on high level instead of getting more ranked points or money. Maybe he just need to someone else
reasuring him to quit here and now to prevent a more serious injury. He is a honest player and will fight when on court, even if he hurts himself. I respect this, Momota is currently more interesting in gaining his old shape back which seems to work quite well over the last 3 weeks. He improved a lot, still a long way to go, hope he will recover quickly.

No, that is way off. Momota was keenly aware of the points and, of course, wanted them. He retired after G2 only because he was assured by his coach that he would not lose them. Make no mistake about it, Momota would have retired earlier, had he known this.

His goal, this year, is to reach the World Tour Finals. That is why he was slugging his way through the match, ... and not because he is an 'honest guy who is more interested in regaining his form'.

there is no prize money for wc. for that matter there is no prize money for any tournament bwf 'owns': world championships, t & u cup, sudirman. all other wt tournaments are regulated by bwf but monetarily owned by whoever signs the hosting contract: a federation, an individual, a group of individual investors, corporate sponsors, or a combination of these aforementioned stakeholders. they are the ones responsible for the prize money. what a stakeholder signs up for is a right to host a tournament regulated by bwf laws of badminton & bwf's visual presentation demands. the primary reason for athletes to show up is for bwf ranking points. without ranking points you're out of the system, which means no ability to pursue badminton as a low paying career or olympic dream for you.

    what a scam, eh?

is something getting lost in translation? the gist i got was nakanishi not wanting momota to worry about points, but rather his health as #1 priority.

i don't see how momota gets points:

from BWF Statutes, Section 5.3.3.1: WORLD RANKING SYSTEM In Force: 24/11/2020 (https://extranet.bwfbadminton.com/d...1/Section 5.3.3.1 - World Ranking System .pdf)

4.4 In the World Championships, Grade 2 – Levels 2-4 tournaments (french open), and Continental Confederation Individual Championships/Continental Multi Sports Games Individual Championships, if a Player / pair withdraws or retires from a match played against a Player / pair from the same Member they will not receive World Ranking points for that tournament.
