Chong Wei and top doubles pair get nod to play in China league

    By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have given the nod to shuttlers Lee Chong Wei and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong to play in China’s popular Super League.
It is the first time that the BAM have made an exception to allow their national players to feature for a foreign side. Previously, only former players were given the chance to do so.
The BAM coaching and training committee, headed by Ng Chin Chai, came to a consensus that they would benefit by allowing their top shuttlers to play for Guangzhou Badminton Club in the league from February to April.
The club signed up Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia last month.
Chin Chai, however, said that they had set several conditions in giving the players the green light.
“They cannot play more than six matches. The priority is the BAM programme. Their participation in the league will not prevent them from playing in the All-England (March) and Asian championships (in April),” he said.
“They will be accompanied by either their coach or a BAM official. We want to make sure that they are not exploited.”
With the experience in China, Chin Chai said that the BAM hoped to create their own league in the future.
“Chong Wei and Koo-Tan will get the chance to play in a quality field. The standard of this league is quite high. It will also give them the opportunity to make extra money,” he said.
“This chance to play in China will help us as we plan to host a league of our own in the future.”
The players will travel during weekends for the league. And the good news is that all their expenses will be borne by the club. It is also learnt that they will be well paid for their services.

Now let's wait and see how the Msian league turns out.

I think there was already one in the 90s.

Or perhaps the league can attract some Thai or Indonesian players.

Remember how local football was more interesting when there were foreigners like Fandi Ahmad, Alister Edwards,

    Abbas Saad etc.etc?

on second thought maybe any league here will eventually be destroyed by the gamblers and bookies as usual.

Badminton: Chong Wei, top pair get BAM green light

    By K.M. Boopathy

THE BA of Malaysia (BAM) will allow Lee Chong Wei and men's doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong to compete in the China Super League between February and April as it will not clash with any major events next year.

The requests from Chong Wei and Kien Keat-Boon Heong were approved by the coaching and training committee, which met yesterday, as they are only required to play a maximum of six matches throughout the league.

Coaching and training committee chairman Ng Chin Chai said Chong Wei and Kien Keat-Boon Heong have been allowed to compete on conditions that the league will not disrupt their preparations for the main events.

Chong Wei and Kien Keat-Boon Heong will play for Guangzhou Badminton Club which also has the services of South Korean doubles pair Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae.

"We have agreed to allow Chong Wei and Kien Keat-Boon Heong to play in the China Super League as long as it doesn't disrupt their programmes," said Chin Chai who chaired the meeting yesterday.

"They will also compete on condition that their coaches will decide on what dates they can be involved in matches that will be played on Sundays.

"The two-month period is free of any major events except for All England (Mar 13-18) which is not one of our priority events and the players only need to play between four and six matches throughout the league.

"The players have received a good offer and since their international assignments will not be disrupted, BAM felt they should given the opportunity to cash in.

"Since many of the top shuttlers are playing, Chong Wei and Kien Keat-Boon Heong will also get some quality match practice.

"We will also want a coach to accompany them during the matches."

Chong Wei received an invitation to play in the league this year but BAM turned it down due to the hectic international schedule this year.

Allowing players to compete in the Super League, said Chin Chai, doesn't mean that they can compete in more tournaments next year.

Chin Chai said the coaches have been instructed to carefully select the international tournaments to allow the players to focus more on quality training.

    I find this interesting......

    .
    I find this interesting;

That a MAS coach will accompany them during the matches at the China Super League.

Will the INA and KOR coaches be also going there with their players?:confused::confused:

BAM decision to allow our players to compete in the CSL is nice. However, I think BAM should rather send our junior players instead the seniors since CSL can become a very good platform to them for exposure and mature in the international arena . This is the best opportunity for the juniors to play against china world class players and any unknown players from the other province that can be a world beater in the future.

From what I understand, the CSL invites foreign players it sees fit to make the league more attractive. BAM's job is to stamp the approval of the invited players (LCW and KKK/TBH in this case), not to decide who to send to play.

Can someone please confirm my assumption.

Indeed. I don't think the clubs will invite "unknown" junior MAS players into the league when there are already a bunch of CHN junior players to be groomed through match experiences with those established ones.

yes, you cant go wrong with that assumption:)

i think popularity of player is important in their current selection.

some say they choose best on ranking but i don't hear ntm going.

i think we can't be wrong if we make our assumption based on the players they pick,

the durations of the tourney with the number of matches available

and players travelling time internally and also

remember they have plenty of juniors there:)

i am waiting for the day when csl start inviting the top 20

and the time to complete the league extended:D

maybe it will become csl-bwf league. lol

A clever way for CBA to expose and train their players by only allowing participation of top players from other countries into CSL. BAM should emulate this.

Invited players are just to entertain the spectators

    .
I would think that Guangzhou Badminton Club has its own club coach for training, working on strategies how to win, etc, ......

I was comparing to National Leagues of other sports like Basketball, Soccer, etc, ...... where invited players will participate in clubs with their own clubs' coaches.

Now, thinking over this, I find that this Badminton League could be differently set up - that is, the invited players are just to entertain the spectators; not so much as to be included in their own clubs' family structure.

But things are working great for our Badminton spectators. :):):)
