I remember when I was younger, there was many stories about Tony Gunawan being the top MD player ever with his success with multiple partners at the highest levels of tournaments. Even for his age now, he can still compete at a very high level compared to those around his age. I remember about 2 or 3 years back at a Grand Prix he beat Asian Harry Potter in mixed doubles playing with one of his students who was 15. Even though Chen Hung Lin was playing with a junior Taiwanese player himself, Tony has 11 years over him!

But now, I think amongst the most recent top players, I'd have to give it to FHF. Two gold medals (with two different partners) and 3 straight Olympic finals...that's quite a feat, especially since he improved his game from the 1st iteration to become a more overall player than just being a strong smasher from the back.

LYD was good, but he never won a major title in MD (Asian Games, WC, Olympics).

Unfair to compare achievements with talent IMO. Him and FHF would have had same results as Cai Yun/FHF. Don't think YYS or JJS were as lethal, reliable and most importantly clutch as FHF.

Best ever: While he's certainly up there on the level, this is a subjective matter. I think we can safely say he's one of the best ever.

Greatest ever: Now we have to look at his accomplishments. Did he accomplish more than all the other doubles players?

Absolute best, that's very subjective indeed, in the top bracket for sure. Kim Dong Moon would be my nomination.
