I've to hand it to RedShuttle and kelana for believing Sun Yu can create a miracle of sort by overcoming Soldier Schenk, which she did in two straight games to boot. After dealing with Schenk's power play, she next has to grapple with the trick shots and high degree of deceptiveness of Tai Tzu Ying in the QF, can she handle it? We shall see.

read the news that the haze Singapore had reached PSI of 400. Hope the air inside the stadium is okay

Yep.. Even i heard the same.. Did Singapore Government take any steps to tackle this problem??? I hope that all the visitors are safe without any respiratory problem...

hmm, guess nothing much can the government do.. maybe cloud seeding in Singapore (reduce the haze) and Sumatra (to stop the fire) is one of the way

Singapore's smog index hit the critical 400 level on Friday, making it potentially life-threatening to the ill and elderly people, according to a government monitoring site.

The record level was reached at 11:00 am (0300 GMT) after a rapid rise in the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI), which measures the haze crisis.

According to Singapore government guidelines, sustained PSI average levels above 400 on a 24-hour basis "may be life-threatening to ill and elderly persons".

If the 400 index average is sustained over a 24-hour period, the government advises all children, elderly people and persons with existing diseases to stay indoors, keep windows closed and avoid physical exertion as much as possible. - 2013-06-21

I wonder if they can induce rain to help reduce the PSI?

On another note, one of the Indonesian minister called the Singapore government "childish" for complaining about the issue.....what the, maybe he needs spend a couple of days living in smoke too.

ADVISORY FROM SINGAPORE SPORTS COUNCIL ON CURRENT HAZE SITUATION
[TABLE="width: 100%"]
[TR]
[TD="class: home_text"] We strongly encourage children, seniors and persons with medical conditions or respiratory ailments, including heart or lung diseases, to refrain from participating in all outdoor sporting activities. We also urge all users to limit prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion.

The Singapore Sports Council (SSC) will continue to monitor the PSI readings provided by NEA and forecasts by the Meteorological Services of Singapore (MSS). We will close sports facilities and cancel or postpone sports activities if the haze condition worsens.

Meanwhile, the SSC has issued an advisory to National Sports Associations (NSAs) and Sports Events Organisers (SEOs) on the haze situation. We recommend that all NSAs and SEOs take the risk assessment and haze action plans seriously for all sporting activities in Singapore.

Thank you.

perhaps, perhaps, possibly the minister was just having thought: "the land and forests are ours... the haze is yours"... if there's anything to blame, put it into the wind...

Indonesia: "We have been fighting fires 24 hours a day for two weeks"

in reality what happens in the field is...

JAKARTA, June 21, 2013
Firefighters battling blazes on Indonesia's Sumatra island that have cloaked Singapore in record-breaking levels of smog are "overwhelmed" and unable to cope, an official said Friday.

"We have been fighting fires 24 hours a day for two weeks," Ahmad Saerozi, the head of the natural resources conservation agency in Riau province, where the fires are centred, told the media.

"We are overwhelmed and in a state of emergency," he said. He was referring to efforts by more than 160 firefighters in the Bengkalis district where the biggest fires are burning, mostly underground in peatland.

"Aircraft must drop water as soon as possible. We can't do this alone," he said.

Indonesia's national disaster agency said on Friday that two helicopters had been dispatched with cloud-seeding equipment to prompt rainfall, and it was hoped they could start operating later in the day.

Singapore's pollution index hit the critical 400 level at 11:00 am Friday, an all-time record making the haze potentially life-threatening to ill and elderly people, according to a government monitoring site. Acrid smoke was seeping into residential and commercial buildings across the city-state.

Saerozi said the fires were mostly in peat that was three to four metres (10 to 13 feet) deep.

"It is still burning under the surface so we have to stick a hose into the peat to douse the fire," he said.

"We take one to two hours to clear a hectare, and by then another fire has started elsewhere. The sea breeze is also blowing the fires to other areas."

Extra personnel from the conservation agency, the local government and palm oil plantation employees had been drafted in to help tackle the blazes, he said.
