    Pictures of the tournament

Some pictures that I took during the tournament.

Unfortunately the lights at Yio Chu Kang Sports Hall appear to be dim and unsuitable for action photography. But the players may welcome not too bright lights that may interfere with their play. ;)

Ratchanok is so good at badminton that she plays only with those who are many years older than her. I think it is healthy for her to mix around with players of similar age, at least just for this tournament.

Hey, limsy, just wondering if you know what happened to the Taiwanese cutie you took a photo with earlier in the year? She seems to have vanished. Has she retired too :(:(:(?

    Alcala bags Singapore Youth crown

The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online (http://www.mb.com.ph)
    December 20, 2010, 6:18pm

MANILA, Philippines — Malvinne Ann Alcala capped her remarkable campaign in the Singapore Youth International Badminton Championships 2010 by beating local bet Xiaoyu Liang, 21-15, 21-18, to rule the girls’ Under-17 crown at the Yio Chu Kang Sports Hall last Sunday in Singapore.

The 15-year-old Alcala got off to a hot start then held off the rallying Liang in the second set with a steady game to pull off the 37-minute victory before a dejected hometown crowd.

“It was tough but I really gave my best shot to win this one,” said Alcala, who reached the main draw of the tough Hong Kong Super Series last week.

“This win only proved that we can be at par with the best.”

The victory came on the heels of her 21-16, 21-19 triumph over Indonesian Febtria Adistra Ratoputri in the semifinal round.

She earlier beat Nastasia Kristiani Patricia, 21-4, 21-7, then booted out another Indonesian, Uzchi, 21-8, 21-13, before downing Wing Yung Ng of Hong Kong, 21-11, 21-13, in the quarters.

The top-seeded Alcala’s latest triumph also made her the player to beat in the Ming Ramos-Victor National Open, Youth and Corporate Badminton Championships unfolding Dec. 27 at Club 650 and PSC Badminton Hall.

Registration for the Ming’s-Victor Cup is ongoing, according to the organizing Philippine Badminton Association.

“This win is also a big boost for Phl badminton. I will continue to strive hard and train to bring more honors to the country,” said Alcala, who also cited PBA president Amelita “Ming” Ramos for providing and supporting the Filipino players’ campaigns abroad.

Alcala’s title romp also averted a shutout for the Filipino campaigners who reached the semis in the other age-group divisions but lost their bids and settled for bronze medals.

(Some pictures I took of Alcala during her semi-final match against INA's Febtria.)

Alcala annexes crown in Singapore Youth tilt

    Malaya
    TUESDAY DECEMBER 21, 2010 PHILIPPINES

MALVINNE Ann Alcala capped her remarkable campaign in the 2010 Singapore Youth International Badminton Championships with a 21-15, 21-18 victory over local bet Xiaoyu Liang to win the girls’ Under-17 crown at the Yio Chu Kang Sports Hall in Singapore over the weekend.

Alcala’s title romp averted a shutout for the Filipino campaigners who reached the semis in the other age-group divisions but lost their bids and settled for bronze medals......

Joper Escueta dropped a 17-21, 19-21 setback to second seed Chao Huang of Singapore in the boys’ Under-19 class while the boys’ doubles U-13 tandem of Mark Shelley Alcala and Frell Keeyan Gabuelo absorbed a 15-21, 15-21 setback from Adittya Dwiantoro and Reza Purnomo of Indonesia.

Aira Albo and Cristine Inlayo fell short of their finals bid, bowing to Jia Jia Tew and Yee Yap of Malaysia 15-21, 22-20, 15-21 in the girls doubles of the U-13 group.

Yes, I meant her. 周佳琦. Used to see her quite often as she was the number 2 Taiwanese WD pair. This year she seems to have disappeared. The last time I saw her was in the PMO 2010 in January. So either she or her partner is injured, or they must have made changes to the national team. It's sad to see players that you've watched over the years either retire or stop playing for whatever reasons. Nova Widianto, Gail Emms, Lee Hyo Jung, and Jiaqi. I wonder who will be next. Peter Gade? Or Pi Hongyan?

    SF GDU15 SIN v HKG

Some exciting pictures of SIN's sisters (?) Liang Yun & Liang Xiaoyu who defeated HKG's Chan Jing Si & Huang Wun Yan.

Now limsy should not be disappointed with Xiaoyu and Huang who are the two pretty faces in this encounter.

They all fought hard and even the coaches were excited with the HKG coach complaining about a dispute in the umpiring. I think Liangs' coaches are their parents whom I used to see during tournaments. They must be very proud of their daughters.

In the end, the SIN pair prevailed with a score of 21-15 and 21-9 in 33 min. They went on to win the finals the next day against the THA pair of Pacharapun Chochuwong & Puttita Supajirakul 21-19, 22-10 in 23 min.

So the Liang sisters were crowned the U15 girls' doubles title this year. :)
