ASOIF names Andrew Ryan as its new Director

2006-04-03
Seoul, 3 April 2006 – ASOIF announced today the appointment of Andrew Ryan, from Great Britain, as its new Director. A seasoned and respected international sports executive, Ryan last held the position of Chief Operating Officer for the International Badminton Federation and has most recently been working as an independent sports consultant in the area of marketing, events management and rights as well as with pmpLEGACY.
Ryan replaces Robert Fasulo who is leaving to take up the role of chief of international relations with the United States Olympic Committee. The ASOIF Council made the decision to nominate Ryan at its meeting here in Seoul today on the occasion of SportAccord and the ASOIF General Assembly meetings. Ryan will take up his duties in Lausanne starting May 1.

“We are extremely fortunate and delighted to have found someone of Andrew's calibre and experience to take over the management of our Association”, said the ASOIF President, Denis Oswald. “As a former top executive at one of our Summer Olympic IFs, Andrew's combination of skills as well as his existing strong relations within the Olympic Movement, uniquely position him to meet the challenges ahead in ASOIF.”

“I am very excited to have the chance to serve ASOIF in what will be a challenging future for the Summer Olympic IFs”, said Ryan. “I look forward to working with the Council and Members to support the interests of the Summer Olympic IFs in a robust manner.”

Prior to his role as IBF Chief Operating Officer where he was responsible for the overall management and delivery of the day-to-day activity at the Federation, Ryan held the role of Director of Development and Coaching, and then Director of Marketing in IBF. In his marketing role, Ryan's responsibilities included the management of global TV rights sales (IBF major events) and increasing global TV exposure and revenue from IBF events as well as servicing the media in general and at IBF major events.

Before joining the IBF, Ryan had also been a national badminton coach for the French Ministry of Sport & Youth in Paris and the High Performance Director for the Norwegian Badminton Federation.

In addition to having lived in France and Norway, Ryan spent time coaching tennis in Madrid after graduating with Honours from the University of Sussex with a BA in Economics. Ryan is married and has one son.

Not many reactions to this news, though this is a major achievement for badminton world, and this puts Andrew Ryan ... above Punch Gunalan!!

How is he higher in position? From what I understand he has no direct influence on the IBF and it's still up to member commitees to vote what sports are in or out of the olympics isn't it. What it does do is put him in a good lobbying position  (which he could use/abuse to influence the ibf okay ;))

Good question...
It seems that as director of the multi-sport instance, he is "hierarchally" above Puncho.
But I shouldn't think this gives him any actual power of decision over IBF, only a potentially strong influence...

I must admit I don't really know what power he will actually have... :o:confused:

Someone got a bit excited there ey Seven ;)

Well, this is still a major achievement for badminton, as it is a high recognition of the abilities and experience he has acquired at the IBF.

Politically, I don't know what the impact will be, but it will probably lessen somehow Punch Gunalan's freedom of fooling around...

andrew ryan appointment

how can andrew be above punch gunalan seven ? andrew is only representing the country's committee and punch is representing the sports industry and andrew's position is a bureacratic position where as punch position is a entrepreneurial position elected by members of association . ryan has been a strong administrator and seven, pls do not put andrew in this situation and he has been reporting to punch. if andrew has grown to this level it is bcoz of punch training to become a leader inside IBF and outside also. so seven do not misinterpret things.

I didn't get your point... (I must admit I have difficulty understanding what you are saying)
Is it not clear that IOC is above IBF for instance?
What relation are you giving to PG and AR?
