Yesterday the French Badminton Federation announced that it nominated Peter Gade as head of its "performance division", that is the elite part of all level of the Federation (formation and national team). 5 years takes him to the next Olympics in 2020. Got the five years from his FB. Wonder where does that leave the coaches and players who were protesting against the management? Will they still have problems? Will they want to work with Peter?
Very exciting news! Glad to see Peter Gade passing on his knowledge. I was curious when he would become a coach, I noticed one of his former teammates, Kenneth Jonassen is a coach with Team Denmark and I Thoth it weird Peter wasn't involved in a coaching capacity.
5 years to bring who up to olympic level? We can talk about Japanese youth and Danish youth and so on, but France? Realistically we're talking about the Olympics after that, if they find the talent that wants to stay in badminton. Of course, if somebody knows some players we should get excited for, I'd be happy to hear that Europe still has a chance!
This is Peter's posting on his FB Hey Guys! I’m very happy to bring you some great news this Saturday afternoon.. On May 15th I will begin as Performance Director/National Coach for France. I have signed a 5-year contract with the main objective of bringing badminton in France to the next level. My intention is to inspire and motivate players, management and coaches from top to bottom in setting up a long lasting structure that French badminton can benefit from for many years. It is not gonna be easy, but for me the potential and resources are present at many levels and I look very much forward to taking up the challenge. I’ve been in close contact with FFBaD for some time now and for the past months, Richard Remaud, Philippe Limouzin and Fabrice Vallet from FFBad made this possible. For me, this new challenge comes at the right time in my life and its a great opportunity for me to learn from and experience a different culture, and try to bring my visions and ideas to life in this. Yes, it is. From Gade's perspective, this could be interesting as the structures of badminton in France are already well developed, but without the performance aspect as there is no tradition for that. There is more then 200000 players licensed in the country, with badminton school in most of the clubs, lots of tournament organized through the years. But never the country has produced top level player except Brice who is quite good, so PG will have an open field to develop his thinking.
Some young talents are slowly but surely rising in early senior age (D. Lansac reaching 70th world rank at 19 yo) and U19 - U17 obtaining medals in European championships this year. And hopefully, no need to further "import" players from China, I don't think the Federation is looking after that these days.
Those badminton playing nation players at highest level and visiting abroad do know english as it has become the primary source of communication be it India , SE Asia , Non english speaking Europe or Latin America . I can only think of 1 or max 2 nation who dont speak english even after staying in international circle for 15-20 years .
Good luck to him. But it's an interesting thought that a coach of a national team is probably still better than anyone on the team! I can imagine PG court side with one of his MS players and thinking, give me that racquet and let me take over! I'll show you how it's done!
Olympic cycles are a antural lenght to judge progress in many sports, and this is what is alluded here, not that one should win a gold. Besides, who spotted Marin four or five years ago?

Nice to hear a legend passing their insights and skills to build Badminton. Seeing more countries at top level would be very interesting.
Her current coach Fernando Rivas, when she was about 13. Anyway, im quite intersted how french will progres in new olympic cycle.
