Taiwanese badminton players advance at U.S. Open
2012/07/04 18:15:53
Los Angeles, July 3 (CNA) Taking advantage of a draw in which many of the sport's top players are absent, Taiwanese badminton players Chou Tien-chen and Lin Yu-hsien advanced into the last 16 of the men's singles at the U.S. Open Grand Prix in Los Angeles Tuesday.
The sixth-seeded Chou, who is currently ranked 56th in the world, took out unseeded Nicholas Jinadasa of the United States 21-17, 21-6, while the unseeded Lin, ranked 279th, beat unseeded Akshit Mahajan of India 21-10, 21-10.
With the Summer Olympics only weeks away, the world's top badminton players are foregoing the event to prepare themselves for the London Games.
That has left the draws wide open for less heralded players to make their mark and earn valuable ranking points, said Taiwan national team coach Chen Chih-hao.
Chen expected, however, that the competition for players like Chou and Lin would stiffen in the coming rounds.
Of the four Taiwanese entered in the women's singles event, top-seeded Pai Hsiao-ma, who ranks 27th in the world, 179th-ranked Hung Shih-han, and unranked Chang Hsin-yun, all made it to the last 16, but world No. 292 Chang Ya-lan was ousted from the tournament in the first round.
