Surprisingly poorly attended. I guess everybody's more concerned about preparing for the long season.

It's not surprising. This tournament has only level 5 (formerly Grand Prix Gold).

The different things from previous edition are :
    • No CHN & TPE players this year
    • HKG, AUS, BRA, ISR, MYA, MGL, VIE, USA, CAN have their players this year when these countries are absent last year
    • Some Europe countries are participating this year : BLR, DEN, FRA, GER, NED, RUS, and SWE when last year all Europe countries are absent here (except Eetu Heino from FIN and 2 players from Belarus, BLR)
    • The total registered players are increasing in all 5 categories.
    2018 : The total registered players MS: 120 WS: 62 MD: 62 WD: 42 XD: 59
    2017 : The total registered players MS: 90 WS: 47 MD: 53 WD: 35 XD: 49
    • 28th players ranking (the lowest rank in main draw) have higher rank than previous year (except in WD)
    2018 : 28th player ranking MS: 111 WS: 155 MD: 294 WD: 255 XD: 148
    2017 : 28th player ranking MS: 147 WS: 331 MD: 390 WD: 228 XD: 219

I hope that Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk could finish in the top podium this time in his home soil and getting his first ever Thailand Masters' title.

Ygor Coelho vs Sony Dwi Kuncoro is a tricky opening match.

The new format seems to have relegated a country's second tournament to the boonies (with the exception of China).

Thailand Masters should have the same level from 2017 edition (Level 5 : GPG).
And the first tournament Thailand Open upgraded from GPG (Level 5) into Level 4.

Indonesia Masters & Malaysia Masters upgraded from GPG (Level 5) into Level 4.

Bitburger Masters relegated from GPG (Level 5) into Level 6.

Korea Masters have the same level (Level 5 : GPG).

What do you mean by “boonies”? The stadium is right in Bangkok (I was in same neighbourhood just last week).
Or do you mean that the tournament is in obscurity because of timing/ prize money/ qualifying process?

Interesting to see Indonesian XD pair of Mainakys in the draw.
Brother and sister from that famous family. Have they had much in the way of results?

I think the timing of this first tournament of the year is most unfortunate, most of the top 20 or so players would rather be making some 'easy' money elsewhere than here (what Grade 2 Level 6 event - World Tour Super 300 ) for pittance except for those who need the ranking points (or for want of something better to do). Just kidding

If we compare Thailand Masters in 2017 (the third GPG of that year) and 2018 (the first tournament of the year), the situations are not so different.

No Top 20 players is a common thing in a GPG tournament, except Top 20 just coming from their home players.

And Thailand Masters tournament have Level 5 (not Level 6), indeed it's Super 300. US$ 150,000 Prize Money.
