China definitely is unstoppable in table tennis and will scoop all four gold medals at stake. Similar case in diving, so far three golds as they failed in Men's synchro 3m springboard final, only managed bronze.

Me too. Maybe because we don't own a horse.
The toughest event should be Decathlon, Heptathlon and Modern Pentathlon.

Zhang Jike fails to replicate his friend Lin Dan's success - couldn't defend his Olympic Gold medal.

For overall strength, I suppose it's total medal count but without a decent number of golds, it won't reflect well. No such problem for USA who is likely to top both counts, esp when the Russian track and field are kept out.

Yes, Ma Long it is , the Olympic Champion. Congrats. Ma Long used to be vulnerable on the big occasions, looks like he's become more steady, mentally stronger now.

More great results to be expected from him going forward, I believe his main threat should come from his fellow junior, Fan Zhengdong, after Rio.

Glad that both my picks for gold turned out right, WS Ding Ning and MS Ma Long.

Live as in Rio or live on TV?
Danish TV cover all events with Danish participants live (which is most of them).
But their web casts are geoblocked...

Yeah, that is a strange sport...

    Let's race without racing!

For me, dressage (that odd equestrian event) is also up there...

Yeah, that is also a big hit...

On Danish TV they replaced the usual swimming commentators with a couple of comedians who knew nothing about the sport. It was hilarious. "And now they are going straight from the Loch Ness formation into the wild gorilla!"...

Apparently there were a lot of people from the Danish swimming organization watching, who got very angry with the national tv station making a mockery of their sport, finding it disrespectful. :)

They had done the same the year before at the winter olympics, for the bobsled event. No one in Denmark do bobsledding, so no one complains or felt disrespected. However, for syncronized swimming that was not the case...

If used to be the rules, that swimsuits (and bikinis of a maximum size) was mandated.

This is sort of normal in "freestyle-ish" events, that are trying to stay true to the roots of the sport, as being non-commercialized and not overly regulated. You see the same in sports such as Snowboarding and freestyle skiing (which doesn't allow the racing phantom suits that are normal in the traditional ski events), and all other sorts of sports (US Rodeos require participants to wear boots, jeans, long sleeved shirts and hats).

BUT, for beach-volleyball, the problem was that it got olympic, world-wide and just plain old big and popular. So the debate started about the suit requirement being sexistic, and also keeping out countries where culture and religion differs from the US / Brazil beach-style ;-) (for example, only one muslim country had picked up the sport).

So up to the London 2012 olympics, rules was changed, and now they allow a wide array of different clothes. But the majority of participants are staying with the "original" clothes - stating it is practical from a movement and "sand" perspective. They probably also know, that is it very practical from an advertising, sponsorship, TV-coverage point of view....

    new women's 10k WR, 29min 17sec. that's incredible pace at 4:42/mile.

on the topic of clothing and running. i wonder why world class long distance runners don't wear something more aerodynamic. at the pace they are going it will definite make a difference of a few seconds, enough margin for winning/losing.

instead they keep wearing these loose shirts and shorts, flapping around like a parachute.

Maybe over long distances, cooling effect is more critical than aerodynamic.
