Hard to tell what the problem is without a seeing a clip. Take a look at how professionals do it and compare it to how you do it. Also take into account the movement from your base position to the corner and not just the jump itself. Maybe more importantly, does it feel awkward or inefficient? You may have been told it looks awkward, but if it feels completely natural to you and it's not being exploited by your opponents, then it might be fine.
