Go West my little snowflakes, go west

Major winter storm taking aim at West, Midwest
By JOSH FUNK, Associated Press Writer Josh Funk, Associated Press Writer

OMAHA, Neb. – A major winter storm is promising to bring a white Christmas to much of the nation's midsection, though countless holiday travelers faced slick roads and scattered flight delays and cancellations Wednesday that only looked to get worse.

This is a huge system," said Rick Hiltbrand, a meteorologist with National Weather Service in Chanhassen, Minn. "It's just going to kind of sit there through the weekend."

    In pictures: Frozen Germany

In the meanwhile it has continued to snow on a regular basis for the first time in a whole lot of years (over here near the Atlantic/North Sea anyway).

Here some pics from Germany on the BBC website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/8450388.stm

And a lovely pic of the UK as well :D

    The Great thing about ...

.....never listening to the weather forecast is that it frees you from that dull anticipation of the coming week. Every day dawns with a new surprise.:)
Thus, I rode my bicycle home from work on bare steets at 10pm last night and woke, in complete ignorance, to see this:
(diving smash returns are so much more fun in snow.)

Haha, it has only been freezing for a week or so and nothing compared to the -30 in Poland and beyond still. And first real snow today [IMG] 4-6 inches.

Can barely believe it is -16 at the moment ... maybe I should stick my hand out for a bit longer :p? Dutch national championships are held here these 3 days as well [IMG].

And an original to compare my previous slightly dramatized ones ;)

    Windchill map (brrr):

Q&A: Why is it so cold across Europe?

Temperatures have hit new lows across Europe, where a week-long cold snap has killed scores. Meanwhile, forecasters have warned that the freezing weather will continue through the weekend. Colin Seddon from the BBC Weather Centre takes a closer look at what is causing the phenomenon.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-16873269

Can only say I don't remember seeing temperatures like these ever in these parts (maybe -17~ but not lower). Funny related item on the news, -25 was a warm day in Siberia so time to go ice fishing. Some without gloves and barely a coat on :D.

In pictures: Europe grapples with freeze

Even low-elevation Lucerne had a temperature of -24[SUP]o[/SUP]C.

But no capital city can beat Ulan Bator for the rights to being the coldest.

Low elevation? We are below sea level and 15 miles further down the road it was -22.9C at 9AM this morning ;). Afternoon was quite alright with practically no wind and now back down to -16C already an hour ago. Not too bad actually (provided absolutely no wind is blowing :D) ...

You mean no tulips coming up yet?!

You shivering Dutch could learn a thing or two from Canadians about how to cope with cold weather: Brag about our fortitude to foreigners online whilst staying inside continuously for 6 months and watching American Idol.

 Flowers were popping up last month already (not kidding) http://www.trouw.nl/tr/nl/4332/Groe...eeuwklokjes-in-bloei-op-15-januari-2012.dhtml
Crocuses in particular announce spring as they are planted all around (so easily visible) and were in bloom as well ... or they're Narcissus

:D In fact we were already looking forward to spring! But this extreme cold weather more or less was predicted for this winter, only off by a month (or two) and not as cold as predicted for the non-extreme parts of it ;).

Only -10 right now (at 3.30AM), clouds have come in ...

I mean, it's lowlands for Switzerland.
-22.9[SUP]o[/SUP]C? That's incredibly cold for a coastal city, considering the fact that water in the oceans store up vast amounts of heat. Usually only land-locked regions and deserts get that type of plunge.
An occasional short-spelled Arctic wind is probably a fun event for some if not for the fatalities and the suffering of the homeless in the colder north. I still remember that day, when a blast from Siberia caused snowfall in certain parts of London in May .
A not so typical day in the Algerian desert:
