The final SS is US$ 500,000.00 in 5 categories.
So Each category may be awarded US$ 100,000.00

With 8 players in each group, I estimate :

    Winner: US$ 40,000.00
    Runner-up: US$ 20,000.00
    3rd & 4th Place: US$ 10,000.00 ( total: US$ 20,000.00)
    5th to 8th: US$ 5,000.00 ( total: US$ 20,000.00)

Since I could not find the information, I just estimated...I could be wrong as the winner of current SS for example( based on IO): US$ 20,000 and Runner-up gets only US$ 8,000.00.

If it is in that case:

    Winner: US$ 50,000.00
    Runner-up: US$ 20,000.00
    3rd & 4th place: US$ 7,500.00 ( total : US$ 15,000.00)
    5th to 8th place: US$ 3,750.00 ( total: US$ 15,000.00)

I am really curious to know the prize distribution...

If one of you have any information, please share!!

Isn't US$ 50,000 the prize money of the 2nd or 3rd round of the current US Open tennis WS or MS... :crying: And yet US$ 50,000 is the biggest prize in badminton ever... :crying:

Just compare with INA's players in Tennis (Angie & Wynne, I didn't remember about Yayuk Basuki). Angie or Wynne still got bigger prize money than any INA's badminton players.

Wynne got biggest prize money in Double YEC WTA Tour 2002, paired with Janet Lee (TPE). By one match play and lost, they got 35,000 USD and win in Double Standford 2001 (Tier II) got 28,000 USD. Best result in Single are 3rd round Toronto 2007 (Tier I) and 2nd Round Grand Slams in Roland Garros, Wimbledon & US Open)

Angie won Single Wismilak Open 2001 got 27,000 USD and 2nd round in some Grand Slams too.

So sadly, both girls isn't active in tour this time.

We're always comparing to tennis. The difference is vast. WE know that and always moan about it.

How about a comparison to table tennis and squash? How does badminton compare to both of these? Is badminton 2nd being above squash and table tennis?

Squash has less room for spectators and is not an Olympic sport

    Badminton versus Table Tennis

I heard that the table tennis champions in China are driving BMWs and sport cars... Cannot confirm this since I never saw them myself... But the Chinese people I know all said so... Then the next question is: can Lin Dan and Gao Ling type world players afford luxury cars there? I am guessing: no. :( Thus... we can infer that the badminton players earn less... :(

Badminton should be compared to tennis because they are both better spectator sports than table-tennis and squash. Squash is just terrible for the spectators... cannot fit enough people to watch... :p Table-tennis is better... but surely badminton is even better for the spectators... ;)

Sports that are better for the spectators tend to create more $$$. [Disclamer: there are some exceptions to any rule] Because there are more advertising space and chances to sell things for consumers... It is hard to deny that in many cases, business makes the world revolve... :D

Has the final prize money been decided upon? I bet the athletes are getting small percentages of revenue.

i have seen LCW's car, i think its a VW Golf from memory..but it had an awsome sound system (from what i heard from this guy in the MAS national squad) and it has very dark tinted windows so the public dont know whos driving it. so he cant be doing too bad.
and i heard that for every time Taufik won indo open, the indo government bought him a house??
anyway, yeah badminton players will never earn nearly as much as tennis...but who cares, im pretty sure everyone here would agree its a much better sport, with or without the prize money

I think the marketing of the sport is still not there. All it needs is a country setting prizemoney high and the rest will follow. If Denmark Open prizemoney is, say, set at US$500,000 then suddenly the sport will wake up. The European tournaments should put up more prizemoney coz European Euros are so high against the US dollars.

Compare the prize moneys to the Masters Cup:
Even alternates who are not playing are given US$50k just for being there in case there's any last minute injuries.

Participation by the top 8 players: US$90k for 3 matches and a life-sizeTerracota Warrior statue of themselves
Every win in the group stage: US$120k
    Win in the Semi-Final: US$370k
    Win in the Final: US$700k

Assuming the Winner wins through all the group matches, he will get US$1.52m...

When can badminton reach that stage?:rolleyes:
