After high profile All England concluded, badminton tournament will be toned down to lighter atmosphere with combination of several elite, average and young players are taking part here. MS discipline has defending champion Axelsen, top-seed Srikanth Kidambi as frontrunner, and the darkhorses who may spring upset here, last year runner-up Tian Houwei, Takuma Ueda, Xue Song, Hsu Jen Hao.

WS, Japanese and Thai players like Yamaguchi, Takahashi, Ongbumrungpan, Jindapon are potential players to bring the noise to shake CHN two represetatives Wang Yihan and Sun Yu.

MD, In the absence of top-10 pairs, it will be open chance for any pair to shine in Basel this week. Cai/Lu will be the pair to beat based on their seeding position due to top two seeds last minute withdrawal.

WD, no doubt the newly crowned AE winner Bao/Tang is hot fave to seal back to back victory, their teammate Tang/Zhong will be main challenger also first seed Maeda/Kakiiwa as well.

XD, looking at the line-up of this category, it will be INA biggest chance to win title as their leading pair Ahmad/Natsir comes here, accompanied by Jordan/Susanto, Widianto/Dili. The hard test should coming from England married couple The Adcocks and two Chinese combos Liu/Bao and Lu/Huang. Former MAS #1 pair, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying is back to action after Goh recovery process due to knee surgery last year.

I am curious about all the withdrawals. The two matches that are 1-0 retired makes it even more fishy. Unless both 1-0 matches had someone twist their ankle or something on the 1st point, I feel like the players did that just to avoid paying a penalty for withdrawing from the tournament. What is causing these withdrawals? Or am I just overthinking things here?

Some INA players have tough test today, both Manuputty and Fanetri are slated to meet two Thai ladies Jindapon and Ongbumrungpan respectively. Bernadeth/Pradipta will take on AE semifinalist CHN combo Tang JH/Zhong QX while Kido/Putra has Cai Yun/Lu Kai as their first opponent. No serious problem for top contenders to pass R/32 hurdle.
 
it just caught to my attention that this guy Agripinna Prima Rahmanto Putra played 4 different matches yesterday and he won them all. Thanks God he won them all in straight sets.
He must be so freaking tired today.

Me too. Why would they, esp the qualifiers, come all the way only to withdraw or retire. The fine, unlike SS/PSS, is minimal.

Perhaps there is something in the rules about getting ranking points if you play but none if you pull out beforehand.

difficult to believe the results but in tournaments anything can happen though. Then K. Srikanth just won against Dieter Domke 21-10, 21-14. The biggest upset created today when Kazuma Sakai won against Tian Houwei.
 
What can Tian HW do right? Last week at the AE, he was unlucky to face Lin Dan, here he couldn't get past Sakai.

Not that big an upset as Sakai is no ordinary player. Meanwhile, K Srikanth was impressive the way he disposed of Domke.

Agree with you. I think personally Sakai has improved a lot. Not only Sakai all the Japanese players have improved a lot under the head coach Park Joo Bong. This I really have to thanked Park Joo Bong. How he took 12 years patiently to groom the badminton players in Japan from nobody to somebody.
 
Okay another biggest upset created. The score of the match is quite one-sided too. Zulfadli Zulkifli just won over Lucas Claerbout 21-8, 21-10. Wow a big marginal win here.

His negative trend is continued also Wang ZM as well. We''ll see Xue Song performance here who unfortunately met Chen Long last week at R/32 AE.

Kento Momota shows the fastest improvement, he's current JPN MS #1, to replace Kenichi Tago who's displaying lacklustre performance lately.
