Tokyo 2020: IOC sets deadline for decision on Games amid coronavirus
The International Olympic Committee is considering a postponement of Tokyo 2020, and has given itself a deadline of four weeks to make a decision.
The IOC's executive board met on Sunday amid mounting pressure from athletes and national Olympic committees for the Games to be delayed because of the coronavirus crisis.
"In light of the worldwide deteriorating situation... the executive board has today initiated the next step in the IOC's scenario-planning," it said in a statement.
"These scenarios relate to modifying existing operational plans for the Games to go ahead on 24 July 2020, and also for changes to the start date of the Games."
Cancellation is "not on the agenda", said the IOC, but a "scaled-down" Games will also be considered.
However, postponement - by either several months or probably a whole year - is thought to be the most likely outcome.
The development marks a significant shift by the IOC, which as recently as five days ago said it was "fully committed" to the Tokyo 2020 Games.
In a letter to athletes published on Sunday, IOC president Thomas Bach said that "we are in a dilemma" and "a final decision about the date of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 now would still be premature".
He added that to postpone the Games "is an extremely complex challenge" and a cancellation would "destroy the Olympic dream of 11,000 athletes".
In terms of a postponement, Bach warned: "A number of critical venues needed for the Games could potentially not be available anymore.
"The situations with millions of nights already booked in hotels is extremely difficult to handle, and the international sports calendar for at least 33 Olympic sports would have to be adapted. These are just a few of many, many more challenges."
*We'll know IOC final decision in end of April, whether sticking to the plan or postponement (few months or one year) but certainly no cancellation option.
So, Japan needs a return on their investment. Countries are starting to pull out. The compromise will be a 1 year delay, surely?
What would a "scaled-down" Games look like? Close to zero spectators?
How about close to zero competitors??!!
Awesome, where do I sign up? I'm sure I can medal then!

Canada has officially pulled out of the Olympics with Australia following suit. I would expect the other big countries will follow soon.
Let’s enter the doubles together!
Tokyo Olympics Postponement May Be "Inevitable", Says Shinzo Abe
Postponing the Olympics over the coronavirus pandemic may become "inevitable", Japan's prime minister conceded on Monday, after the International Olympic Committee said a delay was being considered as pressure grows from athletes and sports bodies. The comments from Shinzo Abe were his first acknowledgement that the 2020 Games may not open as scheduled on July 24, as the coronavirus marches across the globe causing unprecedented chaos. Canada's Olympic and Paralympic committees meanwhile announced they will not send teams to the Games if they are held this summer, citing the health of their athletes and the general public.
This thread was created in Jan 2019, which I believe it Jinx this Olympics. I hope this Olympics Will be held in 2021 if it doesn't cancel. Please refrain from starting Tokyo 2021 thread in 2020.
the new thread will be "Tokyo 20xx"
Will they organise WC in 2020 due to postponement of Olympics
Interesting idea . Actually, one of the alternatives being flouted at the moment is Autumn-Winter 2020, ... so you never know, it could still be Tokyo 2020.
it takes 2 years for the host organizer & bwf to put it all together. a lot happens behind the scenes. wc's are planned w/ a 2 year lead time.
you have to give the athletes advanced notice of at least a year to peak for it.
who do you move from the remaining events calendar?
there will not be a wc next year either as the olympics will take its place again, which will make it an even HIGHER priority for the athletes... 'i had to wait 5 years for this to happen'
Tokyo 2020 postponement decision 'within days', say sources
ATHENS/TOKYO (Reuters) - A final decision whether to postpone the Tokyo Olympics because of the coronavirus pandemic will be taken in the coming days, sources within the Olympic movement told Reuters on Tuesday, as the United States joined calls for a delay.
With pressure mounting every day, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach have scheduled a telephone conference at 1100 GMT on Tuesday, the Japanese government said.
Japan’s Sankei newspaper reported on Tuesday that the government were negotiating with the IOC to postpone the Games for up to a year, in what would be a first in the 124-year modern history of the Olympics.
The IOC and Japanese government had announced they would undertake a month-long consultation before making a final decision but there looks to have been a rethink as more and more voices joined the chorus of calls for a postponement.
An Olympics postponement would be a blow for host country Japan, which has pumped in more than $12 billion of investment, and huge sums are also at stake for sponsors and broadcasters.
A poll showed about 70% of the Japanese think it is appropriate to delay the Olympics, the Sankei said.
The Olympics have never before been delayed, though they were canceled altogether in 1916, 1940 and 1944 during the two world wars. Major Cold War boycotts also disrupted the Moscow and Los Angeles Games in 1980 and 1984.
OG is postponed to summer 2021 at latest apparently.
Then, let's host world champion tournament 2020, please.
