WC2007 Qualification 1st Phase

Men's Singles

4 entries
Chn - 5 players in the top 8
Chen Hong will very likely not be selected, so straightforward decision to enter Lin Dan, Bao Chunlai, Chen Jin and Chen Yu. Chen Hong still stands a chance if one of the four is unavailable for the WC.

3 entries
Ina - 3 players in the top 24
Taufik, Sony and Simon
Mas - 6 players in the top 24 (only 1 in top 8)
LCW and Hafiz for sure. LTS, YKB, Sairul or Roslin for the remaining spot. If you ask me, Roslin has the most consistent performance.

2 entries
Kor, Den and many others. They can choose any of their 2 players from those ranked in the top 150. For Kor, most likely will be Park Sung Hwan and either Shon or Lee Cheol Ho. For Den, clear-cut case for Gade and Jonassen. If one of them is unavailable, Persson is good enough to take his spot.

one Chinese media article have mentioned that Chen Yu will be selected instead of Chen Hong.

Preference will be given to Chen Yu. Furthermore, LYB is unhappy that Chen Hong came out from retirement to earn his own pocket money. I do support Chen Hong though.

Women's Singles

4 entries
Chn - 5 players in the top 8
Xie and Zhang are sure bets. The other two spots will be fought between Lu, Jiang and Zhu. Tough that one will have to miss.

3 entries
Jpn - 3 players in the top 24
Eriko, Kaori and Yu.

2 entries
Most other nations (Mas, Den, Kor, Sin, etc. etc.)
Can choose two players from the top 150.

Malaysia, as hosts, and BWF, can each nominate a wild card entry for each event, as long as an association does not exceed 4 entries per event.

Since Malaysia only have at most 3 entries for all events, they can play out all their wild cards. eg. Wong Choong Hann is an obvious choice.

Another MD is also obvious (probably Zakry/Fairuz) and also WS (Lydia Cheah). WD and XD not so obvious.

Men's Doubles

3 entries
Malaysia - 5 pairs in the top 24
KKK/TBH and CTF/LWW are sure bets. The other spot looks likely to go to TBS/OSH since the pairings of GTC/Zakry and LWF/Fairuz have been disbanded. However, the host's wild card could go to Zakry/Fairuz or CCM/HTH.
Indonesia - 4.5 pairs in the top 24
To enter Tony/Candra or not to enter? That is the question. Kido/Setiawan are sure bets. I don't think Sukmawan/Eng Hian will get the nod, so it will be between Luluk/Alven and Gunawan/Riyadi (or both if they do not give Tony/Candra the blessings). Alternatively, BWF could give their wild card to Tony/Candra (and rightly too, I think).
Denmark - 3 pairs in the top 24
Eriksen/Hansen, Paaske/Rasmussen and surprisingly Mollyhus/Kristiansen

2 entries
China, Korea and others
Can choose any two pairs from the top 150 (as long as not too low-ranked)
China will probably go for Guo/Xie to accompany Cai/Fu (instead of Shen/He).
It's a bit puzzling for Korea though, what with all their shufflings. It's inconceivable that they would leave out Lee Yong Dae. But LYD only appears in the top 150 with Jung Jae Sung. In fact, JJS also only appears that one time (JJS/LJJ are not in the top 150 in May 3rd rankings). So, they will probably go with JJS/LYD. As for the second pair, it could be LJJ/Hwang Ji Man or Han Sang Hoon/Hwang Ji Man (and perhaps let LJJ concentrate on XD)

Womens' Doubles

3 entries
Japan - 3 pairs in the top 24
Akao/Matsuda, Shiota/Ogura, Maeda/Suetsana
China - 4 pairs in the top 24
Now, this I really don't know. The top 2 pairs, Yang/Zhang and Gao/Huang have been disbanded, so it seems Du/Yu and Wei/Zhang are in. Who then takes the remaining spot? My bet would be Yang/Zhang, as it seems that Huang has been missing for some time now, and also to let Gao concentrate on XD. But it would be a shame if Gao is not in, really.

2 entries
Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea and others
Who to accompany Chin/Wong? Freelance players Joanne/Lim, or Mooi/Ooi or Fong/Ooi? My bet would be Joanne/Lim and a wild card somewhere. Not that it matters. China and Korea looks likely to sweep the semis.
As for Indonesia, recent rumours that Polii/Marissa are splitting puts things in a different spin. Endang/Rani for sure. Polii/Novita or Nurlita/Poluakan? Or will Polii/Marissa re-concile (they surely are Ina's best bets, IMHO)?
Straight-forward for Kor. Lee/Lee and Hwang Yu Mi/Kim Min Jung.

Mixed Doubles

3 entries
China - 4 pairs in the top 24
Zhang/Gao is defunct, so it's Xie/Zhang, Zheng/Gao and He/Yu for sure.
Indonesia - 3 pairs in the top 24
Widianto/Natsir, Rizal/Polii and Limpele/Marissa (very formidable)
England - 3 pairs in the top 24
Robertson/Emms, Clark/Kellogg and Lindley/Rayappan

2 entries
Korea, Malaysia, Denmark and others
Korea will probably field Lee Jae Jin/Lee Hyo Jung and Lee Yong Dae/Hwang Yu Mi.
A bit difficult for Malaysia as Wong Pei Tty only appears in the top 150 with KKK who will likely concentrate on the MD. However, Malaysia could give a wild card to Fairuz/Wong. The other two spots could be given to Gan/Fong and Tan/Woon. But I would give a spot to Shirley/Joanne if it were up to me.
Denmark's first spot should undoubtedly be given to Laybourn/Juhl but there are many candidates for the second.

My choice of wild cards

Hosts (can give wild card to Malaysians or other nationals; Malaysians don't have to be ranked, but others must have world ranking)
MS: Wong Choong Hann
WS: Lydia Cheah
MD: Fairuz/Zakry
WD: Mooi/Ooi or Fong/Ooi
XD: Fairuz/Wong

BWF (must be within rule that sets max to 4 entries from each association)
MS: none
WS: Zhou Mi
MD: Tony/Candra
WD: none
XD: none

Roslin on course for world tourney

PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Mohd Roslin Hashim may get his wish after all to compete in the World Championships, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Aug 13-19.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have accepted the World Badminton Federation (BWF) offer to use a wild card entry in every event by virtue of being the hosts.

And the wild card for the men’s singles could go to Roslin, who is the fourth ranked Malaysian at number 18 in the May world rankings list, which is used to determine the qualifiers for the World Championships.

A country can have three entries if all are ranked among the top 24 and the top three ranked Malaysians are Lee Chong Wei (5th), Mohd Hafiz Hashim (9th) and KLRC Bhd’s Lee Tsuen Seng.

Two other Malaysians are among the top 24 – KLRC’s Sairul Amar Ayob (21st) and Yeoh Kay Bin (24th).

Under BWF rules, the hosts are entitled to use the wild card but cannot have more than four entries in an event.

By handing the wild card to Roslin, the BAM will be able to make amends to Nusa Mahsuri for leaving his name out of the list of entries for the Open tournaments in Singapore and Indonesia.

The BAM general manager, Kenny Goh, said that they had yet to decide on their final squad for the championships or the recipients of the wild cards.

But he said that the wild card could go to player who was not among the top 24 in the rankings.

By keeping their options open, the BAM may consider veteran Wong Choong Hann, who is ranked at number 37.

Choong Hann did well to reach the quarter-finals in the Singapore Open last week.

The BAM may also want to give a junior a big break and the wild card could go to Tan Chun Seang, who is ranked at number 45.

“We will wait for the coaches to return from the Indonesian Open (ongoing in Jakarta) before making a decision on the wild card recipients. We will certainly use the wild card for all the five events,” said Kenny.

The BWF events manager, M. Venugopal, said that the BAM would have to inform the world body on their wild card entries before May 17.

Fairuzizuan-Zakry set to be named for world meet

PETALING JAYA: The newly-forged men's doubles pair of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif have put themselves in the running for a berth in the World Championships at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Aug 13-19.

Fairuzizuan-Zakry, who were teamed up by coach Rexy Mainaky in March, proved to be a revelation at the recently-concluded Indonesian Open.

The duo surprised everybody by reaching the final. En route to the final, world number 80 Fairuzizuan-Zakry stunned Danes Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen and the experienced Indonesian-American combination of Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan, the defending champions, 21-23, 21-15, 21-17.

In the final, Fairuzizuan-Zakry put up a fighting display before losing 17-21, 20-22 to world number one Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will be announcing the team for the World Championships on Thursday and Fairuzizuan-Zakry stand a good chance of being included as a wild card entry.

To date, three pairs – Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Ong Soon Hock-Tan Bin Shen – have qualified for the world meet on merit.

“I will be meeting the other coaches tomorrow (today) to identify the wild card recipients and finalise the squad for the World Championships,” said national chief coach Yap Kim Hock yesterday.

“We will be utilising one wild card for every event. Fairuzizuan-Zakry have done well at the Indonesian Open.

“I have discussed with Rexy (Mainaky) and based on their current form they have a good chance to be considered for the World Championships.

“With Fairuzizuan-Zakry proving themselves, we now have several quality players in the men's doubles team.

“They (Fairuzizuan-Zakry) have showed vast improvement and now Rexy will work on their match temperament especially on how to cope at the crucial stages,” added Kim Hock.

There, however, could be surprises when the BAM name the wild card recipients for the women's singles and mixed doubles events.

Indications are that youngster Lydia Cheah is set to join two qualifiers - Wong Mew Choo and Julia Wong - in the world meet. The mixed doubles pair of Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei are also likely to make their debut in the championships.

In the men's singles, Lee Chong Wei, Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Lee Tsuen Seng are the top three qualifiers.

The BAM will have to decide who gets the wild card.

Five players – Mohd Roslin Hashim, Sairul Amar Ayob, Wong Choong Hann, Yeoh Kay Bin and Tan Chun Seang – are in the running for the berth.
