    Two possible reasons :
    1. The Asian financial crisis in 1998.
    2. Other countries are catching up, loosening Indonesia's monopoly of the Thomas Cup.

    Taufik won the Olympics.

Sony was never the top player. he won a couple of ABC but frankly that's because most of the top players aren't playing there.

as for doubles, the old guards of Candra/Sigit/Halim are getting old. new pairing in Luluk/Alven are very promising, they won the Singapore Open last month.

About Taufik and Sony, this is what most people thought:
Taufik = Smart and very talented BUT lazy and a bit immature
Sony = Diligent and mature BUT not very smart and not as talented
Yes, both of them are the 2 top players representing Indonesia(yes they are still in their prime), but they are hoping the young Simon Santoso will be ready and step up within this next year..

Men's Doubles, they are relying on young and upcoming pairs for the next few years. They have a couple up and coming in Luluk/Alven and Markis/Hendra plus several other younger pairs. I have a feeling this upcoming year will be Candra's and Sigit's last year. Halim has retired and moved on(probably will pair up with Tony for the U.S. squad for next year's WC). I don't know about Eng/Flandi, I think they have retired as well.

    Women's Doubles.....hmmm, I don't think they're ready yet.

The promising area are in the Women's Singles and Mixed Doubles. Though not there yet, the Women's Single have quite a lot of very young upcoming talents ready to be displayed under the tutelage of Hendrawan. He said in one article, he's not making any big goals for next year, but in 2 more years(I guess in 2006) he'll have something ready. With the retirement of Kim/Ra of Korea, the Mixed Doubles field has open up a bit(with only 2 pairs each from China, Danes and England in the top 10) and they are still steady esp. with the new partner of Nova(who is currently ranked no. 5.

Anyway, we'll shall see how they all do in next week's Indonesian Open...Should be very interesting...

One of the reasons is that the policy of PBSI's recruitment.
Many players are get into Pelatnas via back door : connection !
Some players can get into Pelatnas without break through the 'filter' of 'Talent hunter', simple...... because he/she knows the trainer, the manager, the officer or he/she is the family of ........ from PBSI.

Recently -october-, I red in Indo's paper that said only Tommy -the son of Icuk (director of training)- has been called to become a new player in Pelatnas. But very funny, another player who always beat Tommy was not called.

Becouse of place limitation, good players from different provinces have little chance to get into Pelatnas.
The provinces like Jakarta, Yogyakarta, East-, West-, Central Java are the contributors for the national team, its supply the most national players nowaday.

Another reason is that the many players who came to the Pelatnas are resigned and back to their province because the training in Pelatnas is not suitable to them.
That's why many provinces asked PBSI to create a training guide line, and provide it to all the province.

I hope, the new PBSI can do better than the old one.
Indonesia is not sortage of talent/player, it is a matter of management.

Halo jkusmanto~ the reason why most players are from Jawa is simple, in Eastern Jawa you have Surabaya, which houses Surya Naga, Central Jawa you have Kudus, houses Djarum Kudus(singles specialist), Western Jawa, Jakarta, houses Tangkas, Jaya Raya and Djarum Jakarta(doubles specialist). Now, all people training to be profesionals outside of Jawa are trying their best to get into these teams.

Djarum for example, opens up their doors to young talents once every year and more than a hundred players would go there just to try out, first filtration will leave not more than 30 of them, second filtration leaves out only 8. There are still other big clubs in Jawa, this is why most players actually come from Jawa, they get sent there when they were young.

Yes Iwan, as an Indonesian we know about our big clubs there.
You should add Pelita Jaya (the club of Icuk) in Jakarta.
And also one in Bandung, the club of Taufik and Iie Sumirat, but I forgot the name.

Also there one good club in Yogyakarta, the name ? I don't know.
