On technical term, string tension is referring to the string being “pulled” by the machine at specified tension value.

The actual/true tension held by the string always be lower can differ by many factors:

    - Friction loss
    - String tension creep loss (tension loss over time)
    - Systematic errors eg inaccurate machine calibration, slippage from clamps
    - Human error

Actually there is more to it, like the string bed tension which is much more representative of what is the actual hitting feel of the strung racket.

There are many factors affecting it. Slipping clamps, proportional tension, double pulling. Constant pull vs crank! Machine calibration. Just to name a few.

Stringers also judge it differently. Is 25lb just 25lb? Or 24x26? Or 25x27? Or 25x27.5? (Or 23x25??).

Ultimately, for me, it's an arbitrary number that the stringer sets the machine to. You try it, and go same, higher or lower. It would be good if it was more standardised.
