There are green, blue and red shuttlecock in the Yonex brand. Which color is mainly use for competition? Which one should I use?

At last, why competition use real feather instead of nylon plastic shuttlecock? What a waste!!! The nylon plastic shuttlecock is lighter and should be the one use in competition.

Not familiar with nylon shuttles. One thing I am sure is I prefer feather over nylon. You can use the search function and you can find a lot of information threads on nylon/feather shuttles.

The different colours correspond the speed of the nylon shuttles, and the approximate temperature ranges in which they should be used. Green is slow, and the target temperature range goes from 19 - 29C. Blue is medium speed, and its range is 11 - 21C. Red is fast, and it's used at temperatures below 14C. Generally, I think the blue speed grade is the most common.

Go play with some quality feather shuttles and you'll know why serious players prefer feather over nylon. Their flight path is a lot smoother, and impact is a lot crisper.

    Not too sure about Yonex.

Many other brands, the different color of label also represents the grade. For example, certain color means IBF approved, certain means Tournament grade, certain means Club grade, etc.

the decision for which speed to use depends on the surroundings. like already mentioned, each speed has a temperature range. i remember playing with the green speed in one setting and the shuttles flew like crazy (just kept going out). however, i played with the green speed in another environment and they were fairly good in speed (didn't go out too much when we hit).

in my area, it seems that the "green" speed nylons are the most commonly used in recreational clubs. i guess it depends on the area, preference may differ

    1. color refers to speed. You want to pick the speed that corresponds to your gym's temperature, altitude above sea-level, and humidity levels.

    2. feather shuttles are lighter than plastic, not the other way around

    3. feathers has many advantages:
    i) a nice crisp feeling when you hit it
ii) smoother flight pattern since the skirt isn't prone to collapse as are nylons
iii) has a smaller angular moment of inertia, which means:
    a) it flips better, allowing tighter net shots, net slices, and serves
    b) it spins faster, allowing more complicated returns (i.e. see above.)

    disadvantages:
    much more expensive
unpredictable if feathers are damaged mid-rally
leaves loose feathers on the floor so it could be dangerous

Ah not entirely red then! I hope they don't come out of the tube like that.

I thought people were talking about shuttles totaly coloured to contrast against walls as well as speed.

Even the same coloured ones if we use coolers example above should come in at least 3 different speeds.

I like the fact the word green is there in case we miss the coloured shuttle :D

Yellow ones tend to get lost in the light but are good against walls, green I've never seen before.

    Are shuttles available in black?

the blue one is quite dark enough ;) Great against yellowish-white wall and sodium lights. The yellow and green ones were Hi Qua. I didnt check the blue ones.

No, I have not yet tried the colored shuttles before. I always use Yonex shuttles and Victors in my life so far. I think I will give them a try sometime....
