While China and Japan debate which ones to choose probably india is also now atleast ready to hope to fulfill available 2 quota players. While chances are better in WS, mens singles is also getting better with some GPG and superseries titles.

WS has better chances! If PV get her focus back then with her calibre I don't find anyone stopping her for atleast qualifying!
MS is highly improbable, PK who has the best chances for qualifying is injured
PS: I don't want to see him as #2 altogether!
Sameer and HSP currently are better prospects but their rankings hold them back + both of them b'coz of their rankings run into the likes of CL in R1 itself, which in turn means no skyrocketing rankings!
AJ looks disturbed, I have lil hopes from BSP! Result: As of now KS is solitary hope

Dismal performances in last couple of SS and now, not even single MS could be in top 16 by May 5th. Sameer Verma should have been promoted to tier1 earlier at the cost of Krapyap and Prannoy.

We shouldn't blame anyone if no one other than Nehwal qualifies, in that case, we can put all our entire on her recovery and winning a gold

Seven Indian Badminton Players Set to Qualify for 2016 Rio Olympics

    Highlights

Seven Indian shuttlers including Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Jwala Gutta are set to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics, when the BWF rankings are out on Thursday.

    1. Seven Indian badminton players are set to qualify for Rio Olympics
    2. Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth will qualify for singles
    3. Jwala Gutta, Ashwini Ponnappa will qualify for women's doubles

New Delhi: An unprecedented seven Indian shuttlers are set to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics when the official BWF rankings are released on Thursday.

The cut-off date for BWF rankings is May 5, the day will be used to allocate 34 individual quota places for men and 34 individual quota places for women to the highest ranked athletes in singles event.

London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal, who is currently at the seventh place in the race to Rio qualification, will play her third Olympic Games, while PV Sindhu, who is at ninth position, will be the second Indian player in women's singles competition at Rio.

In men's singles, 2014 China Open winner Kidambi Srikanth, who is at 10th place in race to Rio qualification, will carry the Indian flag, while Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy will become the first Indian men's doubles pair to qualify for the Games. The World No. 19 pair are ranked 11th in Race to Rio qualification.

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, who had represented India at the London Games, will play their second Olympics in women's doubles competition. They are 9th in the race to Rio qualification.

    No one from mixed doubles

However, no Indian pair was good enough to qualify in the mixed doubles event, while Parupalli Kashyap was all set to qualify before a series of injuries robbed him off a chance to play in Olympics for the second time.

Five Indians had qualified for the London Olympics in 2012.

Though the official ranking, which will also consider the ranking points from Asia Championship, will only be out on Thursday, it didn't stop the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and a couple of Rio-bound shuttlers to express their excitement on social networking sites.

"Congratulations @srikidambi @Guttajwala @NSaina @P9Ashwini @AtriManu @Pvsindhu1 and sumeeth reddy on Rio qualification. Best wishes!!," SAI wrote on its official Twitter handle.

One half of the 2010 Commonwealth Games champions, Jwala wrote on facebook: "We made it... Now for the next step..medal finish."

"I want to thank the fans.. the support and love u gave us..I couldn't have asked for more!! Want to thank the Government of India for funding the Indian team and help us achieve this magnificent feat!!

"And last but not the least Olympic Gold Quest the support u gave us at the right time..."

Jwala, who has got a tattoo of 2012 London Olympics on her back, also wrote: "Super super excited ... and time to add the year 2016 on my back."

Manu said: "It's really great to know that we've booked our berth in RIO OLYMPICS 2016..First ever Indian men doubles pair to qualify for the Olympic Games.

"I would like to thank to all my coaches, my parents, support staff and all my friends ... I think it wouldn't have been possible without you all,the motivation you've given me to achieve my goal was like absolutely amazing," he wrote.

    Uphill task for Indian shuttlers

If the euphoria is kept aside, it will be an uphill task for the Indian contingent to return with a medal from Rio if their recent performances are any indicator.

Only Saina has been consistently reaching the semifinals of the recent events and remains India's biggest hope at the Olympics, rest of the Indians haven't shown much promise, making early exits in international tournaments.

Srikanth, who won the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold, has not cleared the opening round in the last five tournaments and has slipped from World No. 3 to 11 in the last BWF ranking on April 28th.

Two-time bronze medallist at World Championship, Sindhu, who won the Malaysia Masters earlier this year, lost in the second round of the last six events, starting with Swiss Open.

Manu and Sumeeth, who had reached the finals of US Open Grand Prix Gold and won the Mexico Open Grand Prix last year, haven't crossed the first round of any super series event this year, apart from the India Open, where they beat an Indian pair in the opening round.

Jwala and Ashwini also have been in poor form as they have not been able to cross the second round in any super series event, sans the World Championship, since last year. They had reached the quarterfinals at World Championship last year.

However, there is still three months to go for the Olympics and Rio-bound Indian shuttlers will look to sort out their problems to put up a good show at the Games.

Saina Nehwal, Six Other Indian Badminton Players Qualify For Olympics

    Highlights

Thursday's rankings were used to determine the Olympic qualifiers in each of the five categories -- men's and women's singles, men's, women's and mixed doubles -- from the points accumulated in the period between May 4, 2015 and May 1, 2016.

    1. Seven Indian badminton players have qualified for Rio Olympics
    2. Five had qualified four years ago in London
    3. Saina won a women's singles bronze in London

New Delhi: Seven Indian shuttlers, including Saina Nehwal and Jwala Gutta, officially earned qualification berths for the August Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after the much-awaited BWF world rankings were released today.

Today's rankings were used to determine the Olympic qualifiers in each of the five categories -- men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles -- from the points accumulated in the period between May 4, 2015 and May 1, 2016.

Four years ago, five Indians had qualified at London Olympics. This year, London Olympics bronze medallist Saina would be representing India in her third Games, while the women's doubles pair of Jwala and Ashwini Ponnappa will also play their second Olympics in August.

Besides, K Srikanth and P V Sindhu earned their maiden Olympic berths in men's singles and women's events respectively. For the first time, India will have two women's singles players playing in the Olympics.

Other countries with two representatives in women's singles are China (Li Xuerui, Wang Yihan); Japan (Nozomi Okuhara and Akane Yamaguchi) and Korea (Sung Ji Hyun and Bae Yeon Ju).

This will also be the first time that an Indian men's doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Summeth Reddy will be representing the country in Olympics.

A total of 172 shuttlers made the cut today for the Rio Olympics, where there will be slight change in qualification quotas for men's and women's singles with a maximum quota for singles players from the same National Olympic Committee (NOC) being two places if both players are ranked in the world's top 16.

In London Olympics, three singles players from an NOC could qualify if they were in the top four of the world rankings.

Now it is similar to the quota for doubles in which there is a maximum of two pairs per NOC if both pairs are ranked in the top eight. The total quota per NOC will therefore be reduced from 18 to 16 (eight male and eight female players).

In each singles event, the number of quota places is around 34. Besides, one place is reserved for the host NOC and three for Tripartite Commission Invitation places. However, there are no Tripartite Commission Invitation places in doubles.

The format of the tournament will be similar to the London Olympics with the players being drawn in separate groups in Round-Robin and then a separate draw will be held ahead of the knock-out stage.

Though the Olympic qualifiers have been determined on the basis of today's Race to Rio rankings, a final list of qualifiers will be published after the deadline of July 18, which will include the allocation of quota for Tripartite Commission invitation and host country.

I really thought that India should be able to send at least 2 MS at the start of 2016.
It's both sad and unexpected that only 1 MS made it.
