Hong Kong Open suffers blow as Lin and Wang pull out
Nov 09, 2009
The Hong Kong Super Series Open has suffered a major setback following the withdrawals of some key players.
Lin Dan, China's Olympic singles champion in Beijing, said yesterday that he was too tired to play at the HK$2 million tournament, which starts at Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wan Chai today. In the women's singles, Wang Chen, the defending champion and home favourite, also withdrew because of injury.
Lin, who is also the reigning world champion, arrived in Hong Kong on Friday for a series of promotional activities for the Chinese Athletes Education Foundation before playing his first match on Wednesday. But Lin said during one of these activities yesterday that he would withdraw from the tournament because of his recent hectic schedule.
He had just returned from the French Super Series before his arrival in Hong Kong last week. He defeated Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia 2-0 in the final to clinch the men's singles title.
Tournament organisers said last night that they had yet to receive Lin's withdrawal, while chairman of the Hong Kong Badminton Association Tong Wai-lun said it would be a big loss if Lin, seeded second in the Hong Kong event, had pulled out.
"We have not heard anything on this, but we all know Lin is very popular in Hong Kong," Tong said. "His withdrawal will definitely affect the quality of the draw."
Lin lost to compatriot Chen Jin in the final of last year's event.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong team coach Chan Chi-choi said that Wang had yet to recover from a nagging injury that had kept the player out of competition since September.
"We hope she can start in next week's China Super Series but it depends on her progress," said the coach.
nice to see u back in bf
Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng withdrew too because Fu injured during training.
sad to hear that LD withdrew
i dont think this is the correct rate
what the ...........................
LD better conserves his energy for the next three big ones....
Watch out !!!! Kido/ Hendra have "ressurected" from their slumber.
Malaysian pairs are getting nervous now when facing K/H. I have always regarded KKK/TBH as one of the most self-confident players. But, when they met K/H recently, their confidence seemed to diminish.
ANY Chinese pairs when playing K/H have never defeated K/H recently....[one of the toughest jobs for the Chinese MD coaching team]
JJS/LYD are , I guess, the toughest pairs for K/H to defeat,
Danish and ENglish pairs. Although they often defeat K/H, luckily, K/H seldom meet them as they often lose in early rounds.
Sorry to hear that....but this is a good opportunity for other players ....
The longer he conserves his energy, the better for all
I 10000% support LD's strategy and highly recommend him to often conserve his energy.
It will be tough for any player to attend all : HKG, China, SSM
and East Asia. For LD, if he can only attend three, then dropping HKG is his best option .
LD withdrawal surely delivers good news for SDK
LD is just for Majors................dont bother him with those non - majors....
wah.. so many players withdrew??? whats the reason of all this..ng wei also withdraw
why so sacarstic? i thought it should be a good news to koo/tan too
Nope, george...Ng Wei is promoted to enter main draw (replaces Dicky Palyama) and will face the top-seed, your hero at first round
