I think Wong has been a true inspiration in this CW games for all Malaysians to emulate. He worked very hard along with his other team mates to ensure Malaysia secures the MS and MD gold. I am almost certain that at the back of his mind, he knew that by doing this he would be giving up any chance of winning the gold in both the events.

His matches against Chetan Anand and Kendrick Lee were tough, yet he still dug deep to beat Chetan in 3 sets even though he had another tough encounter with England's top pair later that day. Imagine the stress he must be going through at that time. After going through all this, he was a spent force in the finals but he still played reasonably well for respectable scores in both events.

Wong has consistently done Malaysia proud in ways that can be easily overlooked or forgotten. His dedication to the overall cause must not be ignored, and I hope BAM will reward him accordingly. Any BAM official reading our forum, please take note. This is also a time for all of us to reflect on how we can improve ourselves further, Wong CH has certainly shown us the way. 3 cheers to Wong, an incredible sportsman and a true patriot.

Could not agree with you more. I hope BAM will reward him accordingly. I heard that the Govt will pay RM80k for a gold. I think WCH deserves more than that.

I am now watching the repeat of gold medal game where WCH partnered Choong Tan Fook. Actually, it was CTF who was making all the unforced errors.

WCH played well. He should give himself a pat on the back since he is not a doubles specialist.

CTF's attitudes was like he is never going to win since he is not with his regular partner. He was playing casually thourghout the entire game making all the unforced errors.

I watched the game live yesterday. WCH and CTF played very well but I think WCH was a bit exhausted from the semis. He was unable to match the fast pace during both single and double. 2xSilver should at least equal 1 or 1.5 Gold.

Aparently WCH had mentioned that the CG could have played the games further apart since they had enough time not to have him playing in so many games in the one day, i think he was right to mention this since the restriction on players attending from each country.

In saying that each country would have been in the same predicament although the ones going furhter in the competition would obviously have had to play a lot more games on the one day

Every comentator commented on him looking tired the further on in the competition he got.

I too think he played a blinder and did Malaysia proud.

Badminton: Choong Hann comes one full circle

KUALA LUMPUR: Wong Choong Hann began his international badminton career by taking part in the qualifying tournament of the Malaysian Open at the age of 14.

After more than a decade, the 30-year-old seasoned campaigner will again have to go through the qualifiers in the 50th edition of the tournament at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium (KLBA) in Cheras next week.

The world number 52 hopes that a humble beginning will be the start of better things for him this year.

“I only had to fight for a place in the main draw during my junior days. It is not a nice feeling to go through that path again,” said Choong Hann, who has always been in the tournament proper since he was 17.

“Unfortunately, my world rankings dropped after I took a forced break because of injury last year. Now I have to play more matches and the qualifying may not be an easy task at all in the Super Series tournaments.”

The Malaysian Open is the first of a 12-leg Super Series this year. Only the top 28 go into the main draw while four others will come from the qualifying rounds, which involve a maximum of 32 players.

Many had expected Choong Hann to hang up the racquet after a snapped Achilles heel tendon during the Thomas Cup Finals in Japan last May but the lanky shuttler is determined to stay on at least until the Beijing Olympics next year.

“I had planned to stop playing after the Asian Games (last year) even before the injury. But I love the sport and I have now set a very ambitious target for myself. In fact, my coach (Li Mao) has also encouraged me to stay on until the Beijing Olympics,” he said.

“I think I can lift my game as well as before. This year, I will be playing in more tournaments. Eventually, I want to improve on my world rankings and try to qualify for the World Championships (in August).”

Four months after the injury, Choong Hann tried to gauge where he stood by competing in the Danish Open, Doha Asiad and the Copenhagen Masters but none of his results were impressive.

Meanwhile, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) were unable to release the draw for the Malaysian Open yesterday due to “technical problems”.

WCH still struggling to rediscover his form

    Hi cooler,

Wong Choong Hann is still struggling to rediscover his form.

Losing to Peter Gade at the Copenhagen Masters 2006, just 2 weeks ago, with a score of 6-21, 9-21, showed his poor form.
However, he still managed to beat Simon Santosa 21-18, 10-21, 21-19.

Knowing that he is a good fighter, we hope that 2007 will be the start of better things to come for him.
It's good that Li Mao is encouraging him to stay on until the Beijing Olympics.

    Cheers... chris@ccc

Badminton: Uphill task for Wong Choong Hann

    By LIM TEIK HUAT

KUALA LUMPUR: Time is running out on veteran shuttler Wong Choong Hann's bid to qualify for the World Championships, which will be held here for the first time in August.

Failing to make the main draw of the Korean Open last week proved to be a costly result for Choong Hann.

He is set to miss the next two tournaments in the 12-leg inaugural Super Series – the All-England (March 8-11) and the Swiss Open (March 13-18).

Choong Hann: May resort to playing in lesser ranked tournaments to gain points.
Only the top 60 in the world rankings get a chance to play in a Super Series tournament and Choong Hann is now ranked at number 81.

It is unlikely that Choong Hann will get a wildcard to play in the All-England and he is resigned to the fact that he will miss the prestigious meet for the first time since 2002. He was a semi-finalist in 2005.

“I have always played in the All-England since I was in the national team. The senior players did not go for the All-England in 2002 because we were asked to concentrate on the Thomas Cup qualifying tournament,” he said.

“I was quite unlucky not to reach the main draw of the Korean Open because I felt good about my own performance,” said Choong Hann, who made a remarkable comeback to international action in October, just five months after suffering an Achilles heel injury during the Thomas Cup Finals in Tokyo last May.

“I had to play two tough matches before facing South Korea's Shon Seung-mo. He was well rested because one of the earlier opponents went straight to the main draw and he was in the better condition to play against me in the final match of the qualifiers.”

The Korean Open was the second leg of the Super Series after the Malaysian Open two weeks ago. In the Malaysian Open, Choong Hann made it to the second round from the qualifying tournament.

Missing the All-England and Swiss Open could see him drop further in the ranking list.

“I reached the third round of the All-England and was a semi-finalist in the Swiss Open last year. There is every possibility that I will drop further after they take out the ranking points from last year,” he said.

This will make his task of qualifying for the World Championships even harder.

Already consigned to play in the qualifying tournaments to get into the main draw because of his low ranking, it will be difficult for Choong Hann to pick up sufficient ranking points.

Besides the All-England and Swiss Opens, there are two other tournaments on the Super Series calendar before the qualifying period for the World Championships ends in May. They are the Singapore Open (May 1-6) and Indonesian Open (May 8-13).

A country can have up to three representatives in each event of the world championships if all are ranked among the top 16.

“The world championships will be held on home ground for the first time and I certainly want to feature in it. But it looks like it's a bit tough for me to qualify now.

“The best I can do now is to fight my way up and see how things go,” said Choong Hann, who is also looking at the option of playing in lesser tournaments.

The upcoming tournaments on the cards are the Austrian Open (Feb 22-25) and the German Open (Feb 27-March 4).
