    Cantonese should be. It is better than putonghua. Much better. And they have enormous contributions in building China.

    I think the organizer should make the winner's podium wider so that the runners-up can stand side by side with the winner(s) for photoshoot.

    i always thought Cantonese sounds harsh and not elegant. and I am a native speaker myself.

    the volunteer leading the players in is very cheerful, on the other hand, the players following her have little expression. must be feeling the pressure of the final.

    But people in Hong Kong are heavily influenced by the British and Japanese.

    But I think why Mandarin or a variant of it is chosen instead of Cantonese as the official language may have to do with the fact that most of the past dynasties had their capital in the northern region of China, and many more people speak Mandarin than Cantonese.

    I think someone here (was it visor??) said that Cantonese was considered to be a candidate as the official language for the whole of China when Sun Yat Sen was around.

    Only one of the reason. Actually the northern dilect was more widespread primarily due to geography. In China dialects were associated with connectivity which in earlier days was associated with geography.
