Yeah funnily enough my girlfriend always tells me I should be more adventurous! I was reading your post about being tall, I’m 6’4’’ (that’s about 193 cm in new money) and sometimes it can be really tricky. I find it especially difficult when a shot is smashed into my body, and I virtually have to be on my knees to play at the net. On the plus side, I only have to move about a foot from the centre of the court and I can reach almost any shot, and that’s playing doubles! Do you have any suggestions on how to get your height to work for you rather than against you?
My favourite badminton shirt is a big yellow one, wanted the sleevless version that Leyton Hewitt wore in last years grandslam but so hard getting any yonex gear in South Australia.
a colourfull T-shirt might distract them well, At the net: live with it, I can't help you, I have the same problem...bodyshots: keep your racket in front, or be very fast when moving it back (KJ-defense, sort to speak). advantages: work on blockjumping. people tend to lift short along the sidelines. If you can blockjump into that lfit you can drill it into the ground. Most peopel get caught by surpise because their lob is back so fast..most common feedback "you're just soo tall, I really have to look after my shots." or better "darn...that lob would've been perfect if you weren't 12ft high..." next colourfull shirt In my closet (soon to come...I hope) Notice how modest sotx is with their logo (compared to their bags)?
Thanks for the tips. Will try to work on those areas. Actually I saw a DVD the other day of Jens Eriksen playing at the All England this year and he's 6'4'' and he's a demon at the net. That is one funky shirt. And yes the logo is very discreet! Might buy myself one of those in years to come. Have to build up to that one gradually though. I should imagine that you'd look like a blur in that, all 9 foot 8 of you rushing around the court.
trust me, I'm nót a blur on the court ....at least, that's how I experience it... well, in all honesty, in doubles i make a very good set-up'er and netplayer...It's just that I don't know what I do with my length, I guess I crouch down a bit...
That's really interesting, people always assume that if you are tall you are a big smasher and tend to rely on that shot as the main part of your game. I know loads of guys who are shorter than me but base their game on their smash. Personally even though I'm tall I don't tend to smash alot and it's not one of my better shots. My drop shots however . . .
Hey Alaric, i love that yonex shirt, darn i always wanted one. but all the tournaments i go to are high school tournaments, and because ontario high schools are dumb and arn't up to speed with new badminton styles(lol im really dissing them ) they have to be white, but that yonex shirt is perfect.
I'm glad you like it. So does that mean that you can wear a shirt like that for your tournaments? Do they define white as predominantly white or as completely white? I know Yonex do a similar shirt (white with red and black sections down the sides) which is even nicer, but I haven't been able to find anywhere that sells them yet. Some of the new Yonex Very Cool shirts look great, I've bought a black one which has grey sleeves. I've been told that it makes me look like Nathan Robertson, which I'm not complaining about! Actually I recently saw a game where Taufik was wearing a sleeveless top (kinda like a basketball shirt) which was black and had a red flame like pattern on it. I'm guessing that your league isn't ready for something like that just yet.
I actually find people wearing coloured shirts are bothering my eyes... I don't know why, but when I am about to do a shot there's always this time that some colour bothers me.
I've never really had a problem before but I was playing doubles on Friday night and one of my opponents played a drop shot close to the net. I had it covered but as I was about to play the shot their partner (who was wearing a bright red shirt) moved across the court behind the flight of the shuttle. It really put me off and I completely lost the flight of the shuttle, and rather than the tight spinning net reply I was planning I nearly missed the shuttle completely and just managed to slice it into the net. I don't know if it was the colour of the shirt or the players movement, but it really put me off. It was very odd, I hope it doesn't happen too often.
hahah yah they still think sleveless shirts are considered rude to wear during badminton. but the white rule is mostly white, if possible all white, but the little amound of red and black on the shirt is exceptible.
this is very vibrant and flashy... http://shuttle-house.com/page_top_JAPANESE/MAIL_ORDER/Meker_Catalog/06_07_YONEX_WEAR_B/MIDDLE/P027.html
In Korea, all shorts are black. You see grey online once in a while and blue but the stores typically have black only. The websites also have some old-style button-up ones in other colours like orange but who'd want these? Finally, someone made purple shorts: Our online shops used to show a purple short from Yonex that could be imported from the Japan market but in practice, they were never available here.
Those orange shorts are minging! Have you ever soon anyone wear those??? I'd be so embarrassed if my doubles partner turned up in a pair of those. Also I think I would be laughing too hard to play!
My tops are all very colourful i have only 2 black tops they both have patterns on them the one LCW wore in thomas cup and the one released this year in All England worn by KKK in final, i have greens yellows reds golds all sorts of colours
How about this yellow shorts? awful? I think it's awful. HA HA..I have red one......but yellow is......
Here's my new favorite, red Under Armour Tank Top complete with Woven 7 and red MicroPower in NGP attack stance.
