Wei Feng wants to bow out of junior ranks with Sukma gold SHUTTLER Chong Wei Feng (pic) turned 21-years-old on Monday. And he hopes to mark the coming of age by ending his career in the junior ranks with a Sukma gold medal. After the competition, which will be played in Kemaman, the national back-up shuttler will give his undivided attention to challenging for honours in senior competitions. Wei Feng hopes to get it right for Kedah in the Terengganu Sukma after failing to make an impression in the last two editions in Negri Sembilan in 2004 and at home in 2006. Besides Wei Feng, the other national back-up shuttlers challenging for medals in Kemaman are Negri Sembilan's Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, Perak's Chan Kwong Beng and Kuala Lumpur's Darren Liew. Kwong Beng trains under Misbun Sidek in the national senior team while the others come under the charge of Rashid Sidek. Wei Feng said that he was more confident after enjoying a good first half of the year. “I have been in the back-up squad for more than three years and I am happy with my performances this year. I won a title and defeated a big name. These have given me a lot of confidence,” he said. “But inconsistency is my problem. I am not an established player yet but I hope to be more prominent after this.” His notable achievement this year was victory over China's third ranked shuttler Chen Jin in the third round of the India Open. The others include reaching the semi-finals of the Vietnam Open and winning the India Satellite tournament. “It is my responsibility to play for my state. This will be my last Sukma and I want to win the title. After that, my focus will only be on senior tournaments,” said Wei Feng. “At the last Sukma, the main target for Kedah was to win the team gold on home ground and we did it. This time, I am bent on getting it right in the individual event as well.” Wei Feng sees Arif, who was in the Malaysian team for the recent Thomas Cup Finals in Jakarta, as the player to brat in Sukma. “But I will not rule out the challenges from Darren and Kwong Beng. We all know each other's game very well,” he said. Besides Wei Feng, the others in Kedah boys' team are Lok Chong Chieh, Lim Khim Wah, Tan Aik Quan, Pang Zheng Lin, Goh Jian Han. p/s:i think it should be goh jian hao
