A fact??? I'm born in M'sia and I DO consider myself Chinese... come on. Were you around when Cheung(or someone) started that thread ABC, BBC, You are not Chinese(something like that)? Anyway I've a feeling it'll be interesting to read the the replies...
That is one definition. However, that definition would exclude a person like me who has a chinese name on birth certificate, no English name, both parents chinese, not born in China (very far away),..... ABC, BBC, CBC, IBC, MBC..You are not chinese!!
zero, you better get a drink, sit down and slowly read that thread. It contains many interesting views and experiences. Might have to read it more than twice. See if it can help you find out some of the issues that haunt us.... One things for sure. I'm definately a badminton lover!!
It's probably a good idea to ask Chenwei to first tell us how he intreprets the definition of Chinese before we can answer his question.
I am definately not chinese, but emailed a link of that thread to my friends who perhaps/ might be/ maybe/ could reach some of the criteria chinese friends cause i thought it was so good. took me about a day to read it though.
Yes, Jo, I did read about the ABC, BBC, MBC etc etc and I wasn't too interested about it although I am a Malaysian chinese just like you. What I am concerned, however, is the fact that most Malaysian chinese seems to identify themselves more to China than Malaysia itself. I once asked a question to my friends - "If Malaysia and China were to go to war, which would you fight for?" The jokers would definitely root for China as Malaysia would simply be destroyed due to the disadvantage in firepower and army size. But for those who are not, they don't know how to answer. And these are the people whom I am really worried about. Just a thought.
Having a capital letter means so much?? In reply to the question on does it matter to be identified as chinese, have you ever had this happen to you? Q: Where are you from? A: Malaysia Q: So you are Malay..... What is your reply?
Yes Cheung. I just laughed good-naturedly and said, "No, I am a chinese". I said so because my ancestry is chinese, not because my ancestors were once emperors of China. The only thing is that the person who asked the question did not know that there are more than 80 ethnic groups here in Malaysia. Am I proud of China? No. Why not? I am not a Chinese. How about you Cheung? Now that HK is now a SAR (no pun intended), how are your views in this matter? I'm sure a few of you will be labelling me as a 'traitor' after this.
different I view things rather differently.. Nationality is the country of one's birth (unless you change nationality) Ethnicity is determined largely by one's genetic trait's Culture is what you feel inside you and how you regard yourself. I prefer to use ethnic origin as my baseline definition of chinese. The other two have too many aberrant examples. Having HK pre '97, post '97....well, makes no difference Just like when M'sia was controlled by the British. Malaysian (or Malayans) didn't call themselves British then...or did they?
Actually, they did, for East Malaysians at least. My dad was a British national back in 1945. It was not until 1963 that he became a Malaysian when the country of Malaysia was born. He showed me his birth cert with the stamp of the queen (or was it the king?). Anyway, now that HK is officially back in China, what do you write for 'Nationality:______________" when filling up forms? I guess there could be some confusion at first. Just curious.
haha...so my parents are totally chinese, i was born in toronto...am i chinese or not? i say yes, people think i'm chinese...If i'm not chinese, what am i? yes i do love badminton. And just because I'm chinese... Am I proud of China? no...
you dont have to answer this but why are you not proud of china, i know nothing i am afraid, I forgot to mention before i love badminton too-thats why i here right?
