I've heard that one should be able to hear if a shuttle was hit with slice or not.

What is a good device to record the sound of a badminton shot sufficiently to catch the sound good enough to hear the difference between a shot hit with slice and a shot hit without slice?

do you think any phone would catch the sound more than sufficiently?

Or would it need a particular type of or standard of audio recording device?

I think the setting is more important than the device, but a phone might struggle in any environment, because most apps will process the sound too much.

Badminton is normally played in a hall with hard surfaces everywhere (ceiling, floor, walls), this is a worst case scenario for sound recordings. On top of that, you adjust never are alone, so it's noisy, but even if you are alone, there will be sounds from the shoes on the floor and sound reflected from the hard surfaces.

So the first question is: Where do you want to record the sound? Do you have equipment (curtains/...) to change this environment?
