Sad as it is but people must accept that long shadow we see is Momota disappearing into the sunset.

When is his next tournament? He needs to at least try to play something. Will he make it for french open or All England?

Momota should be featuring in the Badminton Asia Team Championships starting on February 13. He has also been entered for the French Open and All England, where he is currently placed 4th on the reserve list.

When you say featuring you mean on the bench or playing?

His play toward the end of last year, including his November win at the Korea masters (his first super series win in awhile, albeit a 300 level one), was the best I have seen him play in awhile, especially his defense. Earlier in the year say for smashes he would either freeze or guess the wrong side, now he is returning many of those shots.

His recovery will not be a steady linear improvement, rather I am expecting some ups and downs… certainly hoping for at least a few more years of a generally upward trajectory for his career.

Few wins this week, including against Kidambi yesterday, good to see.

Momota will win if it goes to the wire.

Nice to see that Momota can occasionally still pull off a Houdini act.

Isn't there talk about the bwf trying to create a wildcard spot for the Olympics so that he can qualify?

If he’s given a wild card, is that fair to the others?

Is there anything in the rules that allows BWF to award a wild card for the Olympics?

Momota's name is not on the NBA list of players due to be sent to the French Open and All England. He was placed fourth and third, respectively, on the reserve lists. Accordingly, his next tournament will be the Swiss Open.

If OG were in Tokyo, he could get a wild card, but not Paris...

Correction: Although Momota is listed by the NBA as participating in the Swiss Open, BWF data shows that he withdrew from the tournament yesterday.
