In one of the matches I heard John Burgess commentating.
I have not heard him commentate on badminton for sometime and I wonder whether he still commentates on this sport. I understand he does commentary work on table-tennis, sepak takraw and handball. He is very 'energetic' in his commentaries and a delight to listen to, unlike some, especially the recent commentaries on the 2011 German Open, which were so boring and jarring on the ears.

I hope JB commentates for the 2011 Singapore Open and maybe the Indonesian Open also.
He is well regarded in both countries and have resided there.
Overall he is fair and heaps praises where praises are due, for the players, the venue, the spectators, organizers, sponsors, umpires, service judges, linesmen, stringers, etc.
When calls are not 'correct', he speaks out and when they are not doubtful, he is very sympathetic to the linesmen, players, etc.
Give me JB as commentator any time.

Fund raising for Japanese earthquake victims

    .
Yonex, a Japanese company, have always sponsored Badminton players. It is fitting for players to help out when many Japanese earthquake victims are found to be in such a hopeless situation.

Hidayat promises to play for a long time

By: Sanjay Sharma Date: 2011-04-30 Place: Delhi

World No 3 and second seed Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia was stunned 17-21, 17-21 by Korean sixth seed Park Sung-Hwan in an Indian Open Super Series quarter-finals match yesterday. It was a special win for 24-year-old Park, who had suffered 10 successive losses at the hands of the Indonesian legend.

Hidayat showered praise on his victor. "He had to win someday. I tried my best but Sung was very determined to defeat me today. "He defended extremely well on both flanks and that blunted my attack. I tried to keep the shuttle low to stop him from smashing. But he returned confidently. I just could not get a grip on the game. I congratulate him."

Hidayat, who reached the All England final when he was just 17 years old and has won the Olympic and Asian games gold apart from the World Championships, maybe getting on the wrong side of 30 but is not thinking of hanging up his racket.

"I still enjoy playing and am reaching semis and finals in many tournament. I have been able to retain high world rankings for the last 12 years. I enjoy the workouts and enjoy playing all over the world. "Also, I'm still the highest ranked Indonesian player and it's my responsibility to ensure that as a country we remain on top," said the 30-year-old from Java.

Rather see him retire than get beaten by young lowly seeded players in the future. His time is already over.

Taufik Hidayat: His time is not over until another INA MS player performs better him

    .
Taufik Hidayat is still the No.1 INA Singles player.

His time is not over yet until we have another INA Singles player more consistent than him (based on tournament results).

It's the same for Peter Gade and Tine Baun of Denmark, Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand, Juliane Schenk of Germany, etc, etc, ......

I can see that none of the above will retire earlier (if none of their younger teammates can perform better than them).
