Xing Aiying in first round tie against Yao Jie at Singapore Badminton Open Share By Merliza Lim Tuesday, June 1, 2010 — All eyes in the Singapore camp will be on Xing Aiying in the Singapore Open following the withdrawal of teammate Zhang Beiwen due to suspension. Xing begins her quest with a first-round tie against Holland’s Yao Jie, the sixth seed. Xing is also competing in the women’s doubles with Thng Ting Ting. Xing said: “I’m really excited to be taking part in the Li Ning Singapore Open as this super series brings in the worlds’ best, and will definitely do my best against Yao Jie.” Teammates Vanessa Neo and Hendri Kurniawan Saputra will take on South Korea’s Yoo Yeon Seong and Kim Min Jung in the first round of the mixed doubles. Vanessa said: “Min Jung is part of the Uber Cup champion team and I really hope to get all the moral support I can from our local fans.” Vanessa will also partner Fu Mingtian to face China’s Luo Ying and Luo Yu in the women’s doubles. Other Singaporeans in the main draw include Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia Sari, and Noriko Goh and Tan Wei Han (women’s doubles), as well as Yao and Chayut Triyachart (mixed doubles). 2002 men’s singles runner-up Ronald Susilo will compete in the men’s doubles qualifiers with brother-in-law Candra Wijaya. They will play Vietnam’s Nguyen Ngoc Tung and Tran Duc Phong in the first round of the qualifiers. Susilo said: “I really look forward to playing once again in the Singapore Open. Partnering Candra gives me more confidence, and we can look forward to an exciting match against the Vietnamese pair.” Malaysian Lee Chong Wei, who is the top seed, starts as hot favourite to regain the men’s singles title he won in 2008. He is on the same half of the draw as Japan’s Kenichi Tago, the 8th seed, as well as Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien Minh, who is seeded third. Lee said: “I’ve always liked to play in the Singapore Open and of course, my aim is to be the title holder again. I won there before, and I hope I can do it again. I also fancy Singapore because I have some cousins there and I feel like I’m playing at home there.” The other half of the draw features second seed Peter Gade of Denmark who triumphed here in 2006. He begins his campaign with a first-round match against Indonesia’s Kurniawan Tedjono Andre. Standing in Peter Gade’s path in the same side of the draw are Thai Boonsak Ponsana, who is the fourth seed, and fellow Dane Jan O Jorgensen. India’s Saina Nehwal, the women’s top seed, will start her campaign against Malaysian veteran Wong Mew Choo. Denmark’s All-England winner Tine Rasmussen, the second seed, plays India’s Aditi Mutatkar. The stellar cast of shuttlers has resulted in increased interest in the US$200,000 Super Series tournament. Tough draw for S'pore's Xing By Lee Min Kok XING Aiying looks to be in for a tough time at the upcoming Li-Ning Singapore Open. Just 21, the shuttler will have to cope with the pressure of being Singapore's only hope in the singles events. The world No. 45 has also been drawn against Yao Jie, the sixth seed from the Netherlands, in the opening round. The Dutchwoman, who reached the semi-finals in the 2004 tournament, climbed back to 13th in the world rankings recently following a spate of injuries she suffered after the 2008 Olympics. However, Xing, whose best showing in the annual Singapore Open was a quarter-final appearance in 2008, insisted: 'I'm really excited to be taking part in the Open as this Super Series brings the world's best players to Singapore. 'I will definitely do my best against Yao Jie.' Xing became the hosts' only representative in the singles draw after teammate Zhang Beiwen was suspended for indiscipline by the Singapore Badminton Association last week. The draw for the US$200,000 (S$283,000) Singapore Open was conducted on Tuesday. Meanwhile, it appears men's world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei will have a smoother path to the final compared to his main rival, Denmark's Peter Gade, the 2006 singles winner. Lee, who last won the Open two years ago, will open his campaign against little-known Frenchman Brice Leverdez. Also in the Malaysian's half of the draw are Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh and Japan's Kenichi Tago. Second seed Gade, 33, will start his campaign against Indonesia's Kurniawan Tedjono Andre. But his half of the draw is far trickier as it also includes compatriot Jan O Jorgensen and Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana. India's Saina Nehwal, the top seed in the women's singles, also did not enjoy a particularly kind draw. The world No. 5 will play Malaysia's Wong Mew Choo, a semi-finalist here in 2008, in the first round. All-England champion Tine Rasmussen of Denmark, the second seed, meets India's Aditi Mutatkar. One of the most prestigious events on the local badminton calendar, the June 15-20 tournament will also mark the return of crowd favourite Ronald Susilo. The 30-year-old, who retired from the national team earlier this year and was the men's singles runner-up in 2002, will compete in the men's doubles with his Indonesian brother-in-law Candra Wijaya. LI NING SINGAPORE OPEN 2010: Chong Wei faces tricky path to title Wednesday, June 02, 2010 - Pictures by BadmintonPhoto World No 1 Lee Chong Wei will, once again, start as the favourite to add another BWF World Super Series title to his name when the Li Ning Singapore Open gets underway at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on 15-20 June. The Malaysian, however, can expect some stiff competition from Indonesia’s Sony Dwi Kuncoro who has stopped Chong Wei’s progress at the 2007 and 2009 World Championships, and Denmark’s Jan Jorgensen and Peter Gade. Chong Wei will open his campaign against France’s Brice Leverdez and is expected to face Sony in the quarter-finals. Should the Malaysian get past Sony, he could face either Vietnam’s Nguyen Tienh Minh, who stopped him in the second round last year, or All England finalist Kenichi Tago of Japan. In the women’s singles, Saina Nehwal from India is the top seed and should comfortably progress to the last four for an expected clash against China’s reigning world champion Lu Lan. Tine Rasmussen from Denmark, who did not compete in the recent Uber Cup Finals in Kuala Lumpur due to injury, makes a return and will take on India’s Aditi Mutatkar in the first round. Thailand’s Songphon Anugritayawon-Sudket Prapakamol also make a return to the Super Series but will play in the men’s doubles qualification stage. The Thai pair, however, should qualify for the tournament proper. Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Indonesia’s Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan are the No 1 and No 2 seeds respectively and they open their respective campaign with tricky matches against Korea’s Kim Ki Jung-Shin baek Cheol and Japan’s Kenichi Hayakawa-Kenta Kazuno. Denmark’s Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen and Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen are also in the fray and if all goes according to script, should qualify for the semi-finals against Koo-Tan and Markis-Hendra respectively. Paaske-Rasmussen play China’s Liu Xialong-Qiu Zihan while Boe-Mogensen take on England’s Marcus Ellis-Peter Mills in the first round. Japan’s Miyuki Maeda-Satoko Suetsuna and Mizuki Fujii-Reika Kakiiwa and Korea’s Kim Min Jung-Lee Hwo Jung and Ha Jung Eun-Jung Kyung Eun are the frontrunners for the women’s doubles title with the Japanese pairs seeded No 1 and No 2 respectively. In the mixed doubles, Nova Widianto-Lilyana Natsir from Indonesia and Denmark’s Thomas Laybourn-Kamilla Rytter Juhl renew their rivalry with both pairs expected to meet in the final. Pretty stupid of Li Ning to not avoid the clash with China Super League.. Without sending any of the top Li-Ning MS players.. it is pretty bad martketing to let players sponsored by competetors get all the glory... /Twobeer
Got my complimentary season guest pass to the Singapore Open from Li-Ning this year. The pass allows access to West Arena Seats. Hope to see some familiar faces there .
