this guy has a weak smash. can you tell why? is it because of the - preparation? - footwork? - body posture? - body rotation? - arm movement? - contact point? - elbow? - any other things? - all of above? - and more?
Simply contact point, Some of his smashes were straight above his head, they need to be more in front of him, thats just what I think anyway
I'm not much of a smasher myself but the first two thing that I though of when I watched this video is: - His preparation for the smash is not good. Often he is almost moving backwards at the time of the smash pushing of with just once foot. - The second thing kinds of relates to the first thing. Because he isn't properly set behind the shuttle at the time of impact he seems to hit the smash not far enough infront of himself. Contact point need to be earlier, but this can be done if he get properly set behind the shuttle before starting his smash.
I think there's actually quite a bit right with the action. Overall it's smooth and the arm rotation looks pretty good to me. The main thing is that he needs to get further behind the shuttle, so moving the contact point forward in relation to his body. This will let him get more weight and power into the shot and hit downward more naturally. So I agree with Jason that the main issue is the contact point. It's too far back, too much overhead and not enough in front. This means that the body position is angled backwards during the stroke which means that the body weight isn't being transferred into the shot. In addition I'd probably say that the racket elbow could do with being slightly higher and further back during preparation, but I think it's likely that would happen anyway if the contact point was further forward in relation to the body. Other than that it looks pretty good to me!
His main problem is his contact point which either suggestd his grip is wrong or he isnt pronating his forearm enough. He is always moving backwards when smashing. He does hit most of them infront of him but he needs to stop being lazy with his backwards movement and get behind the shuttle quickly!! So he can move forward if possible when smashing!! Or atleast not moving backwards when u smash. U def cant expect a massive smash when moving backwards!!! Also he doesnt rotate his body enough with the smash! So its al arm power and because contact point is off, he has big problem looking at the video it suds like his smash is quite hard but then its hard to tell but he def has those issues
How loose is his grip? He seems a little rigid compared to the top players and doesn't have a totally relaxed hitting style. Other than the contact point I can't see much wrong. Mind you I have all kinds of problems at the moment with moving back to get in position for a smash, absolutely no speed of movement (or reactions speed) whatsoever. So I'm no expert!
His smashes doesn't seem to be weak at all, listening to the impact sounds. Weak as to compared to whom? Who is he? n what is his level?
Shoulder rotation and forearm twist are fine, post shot footwork is fine. He just doesn't move into the smash enough, and this comes from not enough backward preparation. Better backward shuffle, get further behind, and push more from the right leg into the shot (keep the arm action as it is). No less than Peter Rasmussen has said "a good smash starts in the legs".
Not really, but he seems to be smashing effortlessly yet the impact sounds are sharp n good, indicating quite a high tensioned racket too. I have a strange feeling this guy is our big BOSS himself, am I right Kwun?
grip and wrist not loose enough. try these two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNVC5PVJyPQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVo73804TQM
Guys, he is not even smashing w/ full power n the impact sound is good. I will not want to be on the other side of the net when he is going all out for a power smash.
Can he change after playing the same action for so many years? The side view is quite enlightening. Something I didn't notice before. Agree about the positioning some have mentioned before the stroke starts. The arm is a bit puny so weights would help That backhand push is another thing altogether
Who is that? Is he a noob? ;P Man, loosen up a bit bro. Love the smash sound. Must be the court effect!
could this hip movement help improve body rotation/torque. In op's video it seems shoulder + hips move at same time.
I believe she think too much in that video. Sometimes you tend to be to conscious when there is a camera around.
I agree I just showed video for example purposes - You can see the difference even if she does it 'sub optimally' as well.
