From what I can understand, all power strokes require the ability to relax and tighten. This is done through a combination of things, including the wrist and fingers.

My coach says that I should tighten from my pinky to the top finger, but I feel that I'm doing it the other way around. Is there any advantage to doing it the way my coach says?

When pushing/driving the shuttle in front of your body, I find that there is some 'overlap' (area which you can use either the forehand or backhand). Sometimes I have trouble changing grips if it's a fast rally.

on fingering technique. there seems to be two different schools.

one is holding the racket mainly with the pinky as a "ring" on the end of the racket handle, then the other fingers do the work of propelling the racket. the other is holding the racket mainly with thumb/index finger and then press using the other 3 fingers.

in reality, i find that either way works. with the pinky method working better for overhead shots and the thumb/index method works better for drives.
