I can't find this rule anywhere in the badminton rules and I have 2 friends argueing about it being illegal and not illegal, i've done a search on this and can't find anything so don't tell me to do a search So can anybody point out to me if during a rally someone does a dummy swing then swings again and hits the shuttlecock will that be a fault? If it is illegal can you point me to the IBF rules, THANKS!!
Yeh thats what I thought aswell but it being a fault does sound kind of right.... I've never actually seen someone do it and it being called a fault you see... so I need this to be cleared up
haha thats reminds of my old days with my super Headllight Cab8100Lt... and when my swrings weren't that good, i use to be able to swing, and miss, and then Snap my racquet behind me and hit it, and it DOES go over the net.... of course it Counts =D
No it certainly is not a fault, some players like myself use it as a tactic to win a deceptive shot at the net on serve. When someone serves to you and moves into the net, you swing as if to smash it and deliberately miss and then re-swing hitting a tight net shot. Very effective because the person is cowering from not wanting to be hit from the smash and does not expect the tight net shot and can't do anything about it You can swing as many times as you want but as long as you only hit the shuttle once it is OK
It's part of deception. You can jump up and down, do cartwheel, switch racket hand to hand, etc are all ok as long as u hit the shuttle once. hmm, i wonder if making funny faces constitute distraction? I know yelling aloud on purpose is not legal
lol are you sure? because if you can then this doesn't make sense.... 15.7 If, in play, a player deliberately distracts an opponent by any action such as shouting or making gestures;
ok, i was only wondering on the funny faces part but deceptive swing is legal because it is part of a badminton stroke. ok, how about this situation. http://www.badmintoncentral.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=4&pos=8 if i'm the opponent on the other side, Lin Dan gesture scared me. Would his jumpsmash kill shot deemed illegal
Different situation. I recall in a game where Ricky and Rexy were playing and Ricky actually changed racquets in a live rally not once but twice.Yet that never was deemed as illegal even though he changed racquets and also left the court twice while Rexy continued the rally.I have also seen a dummy swing where a player faked an overhead backhand clear and then hit a reverse swing clear as the bird dropped.Quite funny and disarming as the opponent thought for sure the rally was over.
I would think that this should fall under 'deception'. Making wild or threatening gestures (as someone did to me while I was lifting a drop shot..) IMHO would be illegal.
Oh yeah, i remember a game like that way back, The guy was attacking or somthing, and then (i think) his strings broke or somthing, or jus for the hell of it, he Runs off tot he bench and grabs his other racquet, and finishes the rally right away with a Backhand Smash.... very impressive ^^"... and it was Singles too =p
This would only be a fault if the faux swing happened at the very beginning of the rally... i.e., the serve. Other than the serve, a fake pre-swing should certainly not be considered a fault at all.
Distraction I'm sure that this rule is primarily meant to apply when your opponent is attempting a shot. However when the shuttle is on your own side of the net, I'm sure that you would have more latitude, within reason, on antics that you might employ (in attempting) to perform your own shot.
I can't find the video anymore, but I think that trick shot by Peter Gade against Gopi qualified as that kind of play. Didn't he fake a routine backhand net drop, then let it fall and hit it forehand?
It was not an attempted shot, gade held his racket out as if to play a backhand net shot but pulled it and swung the good old deceptive late strike to send it cross court. If you watch it there was no swing that missed the shuttle on purpose
OK, thanks Dill. I wasn't sure how it went. In any case, I've seen players swing and miss, both intentionally and by accident, and then hit the bird over with no fault called.
