I don't think there's a real need to disable post editing after 5 minutes. 1. There is a lot of long posts here. Sometimes I'd re-read one of my posts and see that I was vague or else misstated something. Reposting beneth that just creates more confusion since people would have read far past the first mistake before seeing the correction. 2. in forums such as the video sharing or market place, it's useful to edit the original post when something important changes, such as if an item has been sold or if the download site has been changed. Other times, users would forget to put vital information until much later on when nudged by other readers. Forcing everyone to skim around the thread looking for the new tidbit is horribly inefficient. I think the original reason for this was to avoid the confusion that would be caused when one person would respond to another, and the first person would edit their post, causing the second poster's response to look incoherent. This isn't a serious problem in most forums, and will unlikely to be one in light of the typical BFer's liberal use of the quote feature. cliff notes: allow post editing always
just for clarification, the edit time limit is 15mins. a forum like BC is like a public venue. if you choose to stand up and say something, you cannot erase it. you are allowed to post a correction if you choose to. but you cannot go back in time to erase what you have said. having said that, the 15mins threshold is there in case there is an immediate correction. eg. a typo error, or if you suddenly remember you forgot to include something right after you click submit. we understand that writing a post isn't always 100% accurate the first time around, and the 15mins limit allows for that. a correction with 15mins usually does not interfere with the flow of the discussion. 15mins is a very generous time limit imho. no matter how long your post is, i will be surprised it will take you more than 15mins to re-read and revise it.
Plus, isn't there a Preview Post button right next to the Submit Reply button? So one technically should go and use that fuction to check the post before making it.
Or just read what you are writing before you press "submit post" I don't think it is a good Idea, It is actually a good thing that you return to your post and want to post again to change your opinion over time, it shows you have developed your thought, and adds to the development of the discussion. Imagine if politicians could go back and change what they said beforehand.
Is there any option which, instead of allowing change of the original post, only allows you to add. It could be useful to add information in the same place as the original post, rather than possibly several pages away.
Not sure about others' opinion of the "preview" option... I think it's rather redundant. What else does it do besides showing you how your post would look once you post it? Usually I would post and edit it later within the time limit when I have new thoughts or corrections to add.
What about allowing edits only in the Marketplace Forum? For instance, if I sell a racket, I can just edit my original post and say it's sold, rather than making a new post that brings the original post back up to the top of the forum where no one cares? And if I don't make a new post that it's sold, or some one doing an old search and doesn't read the last post (where I post it's sold), they contact me asking if my item is still available even though it was sold a long time ago. This has happened to me many times already.
I believe that this would lead to opportunities of manipulation by the seller. At present, the asking price is included in the post, which is contractually binding (as long as other conditions are met e.g. local deal). If market-place edit were premitted continously, this asking price could easily be raised by the seller if there was significant interest in the item.
There are many other Buy/Sell Boards such as flashlights, knives and watches and they've never (or rarely) had a problem. I think Badminton people are honest; at least I'd hope.
Why not just disable or limit the edit features for the market/sales section and enable it for the other sections?
If you want to check your post before you post, then use the "view post" function. There is no reason why you should want to change something. Just post again if you have changed your opinion.
Please read/re-read #8 and with respect to our members not all can be trusted (we cant screen new members), and it is not worth one hassle of someone being robbed. And you should post a new post to say it is sold. It is no problem having it go to the top of the queue, it will move down and eventually never be replied to again.
I prefer to see the time edit posting removed completely. Comparing this forums to other forums such as AVS, HTF, HFS (for you Audio/Video gurus) they do not have time limits for edits. This makes it a lot easier to editing mistakes since some of us don't check our posts until later. I have edited posts which go back months because of typos and improper sentences which quoted in current posts for clarification since the thread is still current. I'm suprized some viewers read from the very beginning of the thread to the current because there is lots of pages to find these out.
I hope the moderators/site administrators are monitoring this and will take note of this and consider our suggestions.
Of course. All are considered Dunno about you guys but when I hit the 'submit reply' button, the thread with my post comes up. What's wrong with 15 minutes? What's wrong with posting a clarification? It shows how a thread develops. What happens if one person makes an argument, gets 10 dissenting opnions, then the original poster removes his post. Kinda makes the whole thread worthless and confuses any people subsequently reading the post. Hmm, here are some notable examples of posts which I think might have become really confusing if the edit post was made available all the time. http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61&page=2&pp=18&highlight=moderator http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8761&highlight=moderator (this one is a ver good example) And I think the referencing to the posts that has occurred in page 1 of this thread is excellent. What if the referenced post had been altered days later?
We aren't talking about submitting replies - we are talking about being to edit our own posts without any time limit.
