hi everyone, was just wondering - i know what grip to use ( altered backhand grip with thumb on angle of racket) and that you should have back turned facing back of court - lunging in to corner. thing is i struggle to get any distance just flicking and find myself swinging. any advice.
Track the bird with BOTH eyes by not turning your head too far back so that one eye is obscured by the bridge of your nose. Identify the contact point as the bird is dropping, start your stroke BEFORE the bird gets to the contact point. If you track four points of the bird's travel path, and contact point is, say point 4, then start your stroke at point 3, even though the bird is well away from your ideal contact point. Adjust till you get the timing right. Good luck! -dave
cheers mate, ill give it a go. just find it hard to get it to the back of the court alltho i very rarely use backhands as i do round-the-head most often. still usefull to have if i get caught out.
altered backhand grip? i use plain-backhand...gonna check this oen otu tommorrow. tips: -keep you elbow pointing up in teh beginnin and hit it "as high as you can" -wrist, wrist, wrist -practise will do it... at 15 (nearly 16) my dad started helping me out. practising clear. now (3 months) it's a no-brainer...you'll get it, no problems..just train
That's just about the worst technical mistake you can make for this stroke. Using the "thumb straight down the flat behind the racket" backhand grip makes backhand clears almost impossible. See the grips guide for more info.
hi guys, thanks for your views. i am coached by england international paul trueman who taught me this grip. funny thing is i can get distance with feathers but as where i live we play mainly with plastics, i just cant hit plastics as far. saying that im not consistent with feathers. part of my trouble is that because i played for 4 years without coaching i have a lot of bad habits in my game which are difficult to correct. my smash is all wrong but i keep it the same because it does work. i play mens division 1 and 2 and not many ppl return my smash allthough i know my technique is slightly wrong. backhands i normally go round the head or do a tennis swing which works but is sooo obvious which is why i want to correct my backhand so i can in future also backhand smash. practice is what is needed with wrist technique. more masturbation then...... only joking lol
I'm surprised an England international player is teaching that, since the new coaching syllabus explicitly gives different grips for backhand overheads. It's a good grip, but only for backhands in front of your body. Of course, we may not be talking about the same grip. It's easy to confuse them without a demonstration.
the grip i was taught isnt an official grip but one that my coach uses himself along with many opther players. the explanation he gave was if you stand with your back to the net, elbow up with backhand thumb grip like your supposed to and play the shot your racket face is at an angle to the shuttle so you have to compensate for that. if you turn the racket and place your thumb down the edge / angled bit of the racket and play the shot your racket face is square on to the shuttle. he says my error in the shot is im not relaxing enough and my wrist hasnt been trained well enough on backhand yet.
Relaxing is more important than the training of the wrist, since you play at div1/div 2 level, then you should have a fairly good defence, which uses exactly the same muscles, but in a different circumstance. It is just a matter of coordinating the muscles to work effectively in the backhand clear circumstance. ANother big problem people have is having the shuttle too close to their body when they hit it, it should be about 2 feet outside the lione of your shoulder when you hit it. The movement is very difficult to execute if the arm is closer than that.
oh wait..i see... got my racket with me: i don't use the full-normal-grip, that makes it impossible for me to swing further than my shoulder, and completly incapable of crossing... i sue somewhat of the universal grip: panhandle-grip, thumb slightly behind it...is this what you mean by altered-Backhand grip?
This demonstrates how easily we can become confused when talking about grips. It is another reminder to me how important the grip guide article is, and why I should update and improve it! What he teaches you is correct. And nowadays, it IS an "official" grip, as taught on the new Level 2 Badminton England coaching syllabus. His explanation is accurate too
Yes, that is a good grip for overhead backhands. There are minor variations you can try, but this will serve you well
Hi Gollum I've been looking at the backhand article, and it refers to figure 1. There are no figures there, I don't think - can I access it somewhere, or was it not uploaded? Thanks
LOL we post at the same time what a coincidence! Then no doubt it was the grip that Gollum was referring to! But man I like Taufik's backhand.. I wonder how he trains to obtain it...
I think it doesn't really apply to everyone.. if I am not mistaken.. players in YY and ZHaoJH era uses this way to clear
