If you ask me who started Diving to reach for shuttle cock in Badminton, i would say FOO KOK KEONG. Based on the informations that i've gathered and interviews of some ex-professional players that i spoke to, Foo actually practiced diving on courts during the days he was a professional. He would practice on those like we practice our normal shots like drop, smash etc.
During those times diving is not common in the game of badminton. When i was watching Foo plays on tv when i was young. I would always criticize him for being slow and lousy coz no other professionals dive for shots. But later i realised that it was indeed a techinque that is useful at times. Now many players learn how to dive in their training regiment under controlled environment to make sure they don't injure themselves.
Players like Taufik,Lindan,Lee Chong Wei,Jonas and many others are utilising the Dive in their game. Thanks to Foo Kok Keong, The Dive indeed make the game more interesting now.

When I've seen Dan or Taufik dive, it is usually indeed very useful to retrieve a sharp drop and their opponent is not expecting it. I agree that it does add an exciting component to badminton. I think the dive is more of an emergency shot than something you should be conscious about.

diving is exciting and usefull no doubt about it. I dive now when I'm caught on amd would only be able to reach the shot by diving. It can hurt tho.

I agree diving has it's merit. You are going to loss the point if you don't dive anyway. However, I think many of BFer here agree that diving should be the last choice just like split. I am more likely to dive during a double game than single game because you have a partner to cover you if you dive while there is no recovery in single.
I am not going to explain how I dive. However, I use left hand to push while I am in the air. I am able to turn my body in the air and usually end up doint a judo roll off my sholder. The advantage is that I do not get hurt but I have no way of recovery because I am on my back. I saw pro dive with chest down and able to recover better. However, it is easier to kiss the floor or hurt yourself that way. Any other way to dive?

    PS no swan dive please...

i rate FKK as a scrapper, a bottom feeder( i mean his playing style, not his personality). So his diving ability is already built in :p

Since Foo Kok Keong is mentioned, I'll venture off-topic a bit to mention the fact that he has a winning head-to-head record against......deng deng deng deng......Zhao Jianhua!!! Yes! Out of 4 encounters against the mighty ZJH, FKK won 3! Now that's impressive.

I got this information from IBF website though. Please bear in mind that some of the head-to-head information from IBF are wrong.

agree, lin dan seems to end up diving a lot and i think he prolly does it too much to make up for poor footwork compared with some of the other players, people like taufik and JR, candra, kennie asuncion are all people i've seen dive in an emergency situation, usually when they're partner has let them down, or when the shuttle has clipped the net.. these are both good times to dive i think since good footwork isn't going to enable you to cover this sort of unexpected event..

Yea, diving looks really cool. But the first time I saw a dive is a match with lin dan vs peter gade, I was like wtf is lin dan doing, can't be move for it instead of diving for it and putting himself out of position.

I should add this to my training! It's too bad that my coach teaches at my school which has rough (and hard!) concrete floors. I'll try practicing this in my club. I tried it once and I found it scary since I felt that I was going to slam my face on the floors.

Of course don't substitute good footwork for this! This should only be a last result (just some advice for the newer players).

Yep. When I dive, on very rare occasions at SGVBC...there's a small earthquake :p but I don't get hurt. Nice rubber matting. :D

i think it helps in some situation where your footwork can no longer cover the distance. and the dive should be a sure winner or else it'll just be a waste... when your partner cannot cover the court while you are recovering from diving. it might be a good distraction too :D
