    I am a medium level club player of 48yrs. At present I play doubles only.According to my club mates my smashes and net shots are very good.In all other fields I perform well except in back hand shots.I also feel so. But usually my team cannot win against inferior teams.What shall I do to win?

    Maybe the teams you think are inferior are not. :p

    My partner and I used to play this one pair and we would lose every time though it was very close. We could not understand it. My partner and I had better all around skills than both opponents, we were faster; in just about all aspects we were better yet we lost to a pair of "inferior" players.

    Then I started realizing that each aspect does not equal the sum of its parts. I realized though we had better skills, we were not better at winning. They were doing something better to beat us. So the fact of the matter was though my partner and I were technically more sound players, we were not as good as our opponents because we could not beat them.

    Then I realized why we could not beat our opponents, fixed it and now we can beat them rather easily. :)

    1. If your team repeatedly loses against "inferior" teams, then perhaps those teams are not really inferior.
    2. Post this in the "General" forum. Coaching forum is for discussion about coaching methods.

    Thank u for the advice and I also think that the opponents are not inferior as I thought. My assesment was on the following grounds.I beat them 15-0,15-1 or utmost15-2 when I play half court singles against them as part of practice.My jump smashes are winners even from the base line.When my net drops end rallies they stand with wondered eyes and glued feet.What really wrong may be my superiority feeling.However I will do away with it and shall improve myself. Thank you

    Single and doubles are totally different games. With different shot selection and strategy involved. More important, team work count a lot in doubles. Good team work will upgrade each player's ability, while bad team work further downgrade each individual.

    That's why, u see most time, there are designated double pairs to play with each other for years. Usually, the randomly paired doulbe pairs perform below any expectation, even if both could be very good single players. ;)

    Dang, who are you guys playing to beat them 0 and 1? If at similar levels, you are not at similar levels. :p You need to find better competition. :)

    You can beat your opponents individually in a half court singles by big margins. But when playing doubles you lose. How is your partner playing level compared to you? If your partner level if about the same as yours then there are serious problems between you.

    I could give you one example about what I experience often during my doubles games. In a side by side situation:
    - my partner is drawn to net by the opponent's drop shot;
    - since he is drawn to the net a move a bit closer to the center line to cover him;
    - my partner returns a drop shop forcing the opponent for a lift;
    - the shuttle's trajectory is close the the center line, but my side of court
    - my partner comes back from the net, all the way to the doubles baseline to do a full smash;

    You may guess the final result. In doubles, the partners need understanding, the combination of efforts, trust the partner(s) and more importantly, own limitations (i.e. when to let the partner play the shot). Playing singles in a doubles game, may not win your matches however good skills you have.
