WHY DO PEOPLE CALL SHUTTLES BIRDIES!!!!!! IN ENGLAND WE CALL THEM WHAT THEY ARE!! SHUTTLES!!!!! ITS SOOOOOOOOOO ANNOYING!!!!!! ARRGH!!! LIKE AMERICANS CALL FOOTIE SOCCER!!!!! WHY!!!!! WHY!!!!!!!!!!!:crying: :crying: :crying: :crying:
Similar question: Why is baseball called rounders in england! It's soooo annoying! Because the two terms mean the same thing. So there you have it!
Actually, I think you'll find that it's the Americans that stole rounders and called it baseball Maybe shuttles are called birdies because, like a bird, they possess feathers? As for the difference in language, well, Americans are funny like that. Just accept it and life will run a whole lot smoother
OMGHI2U!!! ... ... ... ... ... Maybe in the U.S. we feel it's really a bird and not a shuttle. ... ...
I don't know why it bothers u so much. In different language/culture, the same item might be identified with tons of different names. As long as the name is not meant to offened any individual or group, i don't see why it's an issue.
Yes, Dinkalot is right, as is yy_ling. After all, it's hard to understand British movies from my point of view. What "lorry" (truck)? What do you mean by "claret" (blood?). Stuff varies from region to region. After all, I heard that some ppl say "iron" or "wood" when they hit the birdie/shuttle on the frame. But in my area, we say "woodshot." It's just depends on the area.
Cuz there are feathers from shuttles, and they come from birdsss (yeah, for idiots that didnt know) BIRDIEEEEEEEEE =) I just call them Shuttles in canada.. "Volants" in french
Errr..... I don't want to nitpick, but I think the term "soccer" originated in England. Here's the etymology of the word: soccer 1889, socca, later socker (1891), soccer (1895), originally university slang, from a shortened form of Assoc., abbreviation of association in Football Association (as opposed to Rugby football); cf. rugger, but they hardly could have taken the first three letters of Assoc.
Since you're so annoyed when people call them birdies, I'd like to let you know that in some countries they call them "balls".
lol this post reminds me of looking into a toy store in china town anyways, ppl don't call it a shuttle b/c 1) birdy's easier to say and 2) saying shuttle or shuttlecock sounds gay, there i said it
I love the post about how Soccer got it's name! In the UK in my experience no one uses the term birdee, but I really don't think it's a problem that other people do. I think it's nice that everyone has their own different terms for things and local lingo. However, I think it's great that we call them shuttlecocks, you can have hours of fun making innuendos. A couple of weeks about I hit my mixed partner right in the arse with a shuttle. The jokes were superb!
Um...1) Yes, that's true...and 2) No, it doesn't. Also, I don't appreciate using sexual references for derogatory remarks, it's quite disparaging. Reminds me of a time when I was just hanging around, and someone accidentally and unintentionally (not knowing the mistake they were making 'till too late) asked me if they could see my little "cock". LOL!
