I play at a University Club all the members have some technique , unfortunatly we do not have a coach so we rely on our own knowlage to run drills. If you have any good suggestions for drills that will improve fast racquet skills please post.:)

Drives comes to mind. You could drive rallies as fast as possible straight for 10 min and then crosscourt for another 10 min.

Another one would involve 3 players with one driving against the other two. That'll train your reflex and blocking abilities.

Also, you can play doubles with just the doubles service area (without the baseline). That means your shots has to be flat and not go too far

drive off a wall, move closer and closer. when you can smash/drive hard at the wall and try to defend the rebound. Can be very hard if our close enough. try standing about a metre away. It makes your reflexs and racket movement much faster.(well, it did for me)

or just set up smashing returning drills. you get much faster from practicing returning smashes. try returning smashes from half court if its too easy.

Stay back at the double's service line and have your partner at the net and drill you. For even faster, you move to the front service line.

First of all, we can differentiate between hand speed in the lateral plane, and hand speed as it relates to the speed of the shot. Both are important, just keep in mind that you can use variations of a drill to give extra emphasis to what you need to improve.

For example, doing drives from midcourt on a half-court is the basic drill. Pay attention to how you feel doing this -> do you have trouble getting your racquet on the shuttle? Does the bird jump off your racquet at a higher speed than it gets there? You see, this drill can be used to diagnose problems with your skills/technique.

So, if you have trouble getting your racquet on the shuttle, you can do drive exercises where you're standing closer to the opponent. For example, do some drives with each player standing right behind the front service line.

Maybe your power is lacking? Move back, and focus on generating more power for your stroke.

Note that the above are what I consider "control" drills. Often people will have trouble with their racquet speed because they have poor control of their position, shotmaking and decision-making. As their control goes up, their racquet speed will go up as well, at least to a decent baseline ability.

Once you have that basic control down, then you'd want to start looking at "overloading" your speed using multi-person or multi-shuttle exercises. Multi-shuttle allows you to train at a pace greater than what your training partners can usually generate. Multi-person (e.g. 2 on 1 drives) are control drills except set in a lopsided situation so 1 side has more control.

Two common drills for increasing racquet speed.

    1) Feeder stands at net and throws shuttles downwards in quick succession.

    2) Flat driving with 2 shuttles in the air at the same time.

2 shuttles in the air while driving, that sounds intersting, we often do that with clears, but ive never tried it with drives. Ill be sure to give it a go.

Stand just in front of the service line (between the service line and the net). Have another person stand on the other side of the net and throw birds at you. This can be used as a defensive drill (feeder throws downward, and quickly), or as a drill to help speed at the net (feeder feeds killable shots). The drill will really help with reaction speed, and get rid of any long swings, if you get into that bad habit. Hope this helps. I know it helps me.
