Has anyone thought about constructing a stringing machine with the badminton string directly hooked up to weight plates. Does one need a very slippery (low friction) pulley column to re-direct the force of the pull?
well, that would be real constant pull allright but, the ease of the dropweights are: they're not really 20-35lbs, so when you drop it, you can guide it, and then lift it back up. if you have 34 lbs of dumbells hanging on a wire, that's hard work for a 22x24 stringing job
Also, how to attach the string end to the dumbells? Tie and untie each time after tension 1 piece of string, may take me 10 hrs to finish a racket. Unless you can find a super strong clip, which can be clamped on the string end, after string being guided through gromments.
Yes, I have build a prototype before and the issue is you actually did a 42~44 rep of lifting whatever tension you want on the string. It is really tiring... Also I considered not using weight, using a loop to hold it with your foot. Attach a digital weight to the tensioning head. This way, you can save money on the weight and work out on your back too. Call me for more detail on both type.
The turntable is easy to find but the pulley column and the clip to attach the string to the weight plates require more research.
Maybe we can take out the linear gripper from the typical drop weight machine and attaches it to a device that holds the weight plates. Furthermore, the weight plates are moved back to position via foot operated levers. http://www.mutualpower.net/Hercules690.htm
On 1 foot and on a rope? I assume you are talking about using your foot to tension the string. What I tried is... Just wait for diagram tonight...
What kind of pulley column do we need? The string has to bend ninety degree without getting heated by friction. The pulley wheel's surface has to be absolutely smooth and slippery.
some teflon tubing could work.... that stuff is slippery as heck How about a lever with all weights on it, you stand on that when you weave, grip the string, and step off the lever, dropping the weights... Though all this is turning it into a lot of weird and complicated stuff
I will have to see the prototype before I go ahead and build it! my stretching machine is a stair case ball where I can loop string around it

Figure 1 is my original design and similar to what Master Peter the Greatest was thinking. Figure 2 is an improved version which you only need 1/2 of the weight to achieve the sane tension Figure 3 is the manual tension by hand I was talking about All you need is a fly clamp for tensioning head. Drill a hole on the center divider. Screw in a ring and tide a steel wire to it.
I think fig 2 would be the best option, but those two pulley's can cause some friction. For sake of ease, I think being able to operate the weights with the power in your legs would be easier... But I wouldn't know how... as a 'gripper', why not use a starting clamp? it's pretty much designed for things like this
How about foot operated levers, cables and pulleys to jack the weight plates up again? Okay, this is getting very weird.
It's slowly turning into quitte the death contraption. You could even use the pulley's, and then the lver for the weights, and incorporate some sort of ratchet, so you can jack up the weight with your feet, making multiple drops possible. this whole plan has 'crushed foot' written all over it...
That thought has come over my mind when I came up with the figure 1. I actually thought of some death trap for my foot and after thought of 25 lb of weight dropping on my foot, I decided to go with figure 3. However, the thought of the foot tensioner slip and hit me in the head does not make me feel any better... Figure 4 will come up later tonight.
