I was just wondering what kind of role triceps play in overhead badminton strokes. I just took notice that you extend your arm (like unbend at the elbow), and that should involve your triceps. Thanks
Well I think that the triceps are used the way you just discribed in your post. But as you probably noticed, the extension of the triceps does not contribute to the power of you stroke as much as the shoulder rotation (from your rotator cuff mucles) and the pronation of your forearm (the extension of the arm uses alot of the momentum created by the rotation of the shoulder, meaning that the triceps are not used as much as the movement suggests it). I rarely feel my triceps burning or hurting after a practice session, while I can definitively feel a burn in my shoulder and forearm.
triceps are not used very much. Forearm, biceps and shoulder muscles are the main ones. Its good to keep everything at a decent strength level though.
i disagree. if you look at a standard overhead shot, the tricep is what leads the forearm out. it accelerates the forearm and is a vital part of the power stroke. check out this video, at around 1:47. you can see that the tricep is being used: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbAAf5Zk0CY&NR=1
I agree with kwun that the tricep is important. What else extends your forearm? You perhaps won't notice more power in your shots if you strengthen it, but I think you may find better endurance/consistency. I would argue the same about the deltoids, posterior shoulder, scapular muscles and latisimus dorsi.
i have recently starting using a head heavy racket and focusing more on attack. now my tricep is sore from nearly 3.5 hours of non-stop play last night.

pls becareful with head heavy racquets - maybe it's just me, but i picked up 2x tennis elbow...first using a gosen racquet some yrs ago and currently with the AT700LTD :crying: i agree with mathieu that if you are in the gym working out muscle groups to enhance your game, generally the rotator cuffs will provide greater stabilisation + power to the shoulder joint and forearm muscles to increase wrist strength. IMO, i think the speed/power of a smash is generated mostly in the rotation of the shoulder and the wrist snap.
I agree I ever play once where there are only 3 pairs of doubles. It was so vigorous In one of game before i go into court to play ( after some rest), suddenly my tricep jump vigorously ( never happen before). I got frighten and rest to wait for it to stop. Hereby i conclude that tricep is important And i have big triceps Cheers. My triceps are at least two times bigger than others I personally believe what kwun say is true, my triceps do help me play better( one way or another) in badminton
I was thinking of building up my triceps as I thought this would help with my power in my shots so judgeing from these threads it looks like a good idea

think the triceps are very impt in badminton.i emphasize more in my triceps and shoulders during weight training than my biceps.
