does height really matters in badminton?
what are the advantages if your tall?

    one more question guys...........
is it true that if you do weights at an early age such as 13 to 15 ou will not grow taller anymore since the weights is too heavy?
i just heard this from someone and i find it quite interesting

    tnx to all

yes there is some advantages, the fact that you can go to the net with less steps, dont need to jump to get good angle etc...
but there is much more advantages for being small!
and about the weights: if you don't over-do it , and keep all the rules (straight back and so on..) you will be fine.
you should stop growing at 21 years-old.

    IMO:

In some grade its advantageous to be tall for smashes and to have longer reach but it comes down to technique as well. I know someone tall but their crap.

Doing weights at a younger weight will prevent you from growing, just do light weights at a young weight then heavy when you get to bout 18 ish.

Dunno if I'm right but please correct me

yes height is very important in all aspect.
tall players reach is better while short players need to run more!
both has their advantages and disadvantages.
if you r tall but clumsy u will have a hard time against a shorter player who is
explosive n fast. the same goes the other way round.
but if both r explosive the taller guy is a better bet provided of equal skill, tactical
    physical and mentality!

It's a trade-off. Tall players have better reach & take less steps to move around the court, but that comes at the expense of agility. Shorter players have a lower center of gravity, which makes it easier for them to change direction and move around the court quickly.

When it comes down to it though, agility can be taught to tall players. You can't teach reach to short players :)

we can't teach the short players 'reach'? that i am not too sure you are correct! we can improve their (the shorter guys) lunges in front court and explosive leap/jump in the back court to compensate their 'shorter reach'!
    ;)

Sorry, I was more referring to arm length. Of course you're correct in saying that it can be compensated for.

yes if its the arm reach you are referring then obviously they are not the same.
for shorter guy they have to be very agile and explosive to retrieve smashes.

in terms of power the taller ones should have more because of the height.

as for the ladies its quite obvious when we see a match between a tall and a shorter player - at any angle its always the taller having the advantage when there is a rally but on the other hand its always the shorter one that are more explosive!

    Hi
I am pretty tall...194 cm :D and that gives me some advantages and few head aches. Being tall means you don't need to run a lot, better angels on my smashes, fast drops or cross court drops/smashes. I can intercept low attacking clears because shorter players tend to forget that i am tall :p. On the other hand i have to be aware of body smashes and pushes close to the net which require lots of leg muscles because i have to go lower than usual. But all in all i like to be tall because many short (bad players) tend to just give up when they compete against me:D:D:D:D:D:D

its good you are honest to share that with us!

actually tall or short guy is not so much of a problem than a deceptive player, he makes magical things happen in d court - and u r always a few second late to anticipate where his shorts are coming!

    so the scenario would be:
    a. for the shorter guy probably he would have to throw his body all over the court to retrieve the shorts!

    b. for the taller ones probably he will have back pain trying to intercept a missile!

Well, as far as height goes, below adulthood and the highest junior level, height will almost always be an advantage. Lifting weights won't affect how tall you grow, that's already decided before you're born. As you get older you'll find that the taller players aren't as deadly because their opponents are as strong as they are. Besides usually being stronger, being taller allows a player to intercept the shuttle earlier which provides a more acute angle for shots as well as some extra power on top.

    178 +/- 5

true very true indeed if you say its the way you play! however as for the height i think 178 +/- 5 would be ideal. anybody here has any statistic on height research done? ;)

A lot of top players are 178 and above, well there are a few exceptions, Markis Kido, notably. I am 173 and I think I would benefit from being slightly taller than my current stature.
