Sometimes the shuttle comes towards your ear, when that happens, I usually miss the shuttle. Or just above your head. How do you defend these kind of shots?

    Yea

I know what you're talking about. I think that body shots are sometimes the hardest to make, especially if they're coming fast. If it were to come to your ear, then I'd try to move my body, or at least my head, then just try to swing. But if it's too fast, then I dunno what to do, I usually miss those ones

Hehe, ya.. those shots I agree are annoying...
but there is one easy way but yet hard way. the pros have quck reflexes, quick enough to move out of the way and use the raquet in a short swing to return the shuttle.
I watched my coach do it. He had a game of singles one by one with the training group, and no one got even 1 point off him, it was funny, but good to watch. We (reffering to the training group) attacked, defended as much as we could but still couldnt do anything, but considering he used to play at international level, was top player for china team from 94-97, i think we did pretty well as our first tries =)

Ask your coach to drive birds with you... He should be able to set the pace a little faster than what you're used to so you actually have to try. Works for me.

When the bird is hit hard at my head, I just chicken out and duck, and I am very happy if my head is still on my shoulders. Maybe that is why I am not a top player -- no winning attitude.

yeah - it's happened a couple of times - but like i said, i've got used to it, i usually miss the return cause i turn my head - caught it right in the side of the head b4. its not so bad now tho - my net returns are much tighter

    Neil

PS i have my racquet up as well just in case they hit it back at me - i've got some freak returns that way :D

Well in the first place you should be on the ball of your feet and you should automatically bend and you should also have your racquet forward and if you read my response in the other thread, you'd just drive anything back from that depending on how well your reflexes are.

Hmm.......I've got to ask a friend smash at me and I'll try this. lol. I am on the ball of my feet, and I usually bend down immeidately, but for a different reason. To avoid the shuttle hitting me! lol :D
