ok, how do you do this? do you first pretend to do a jump smash and have that groan look, and then you do an overhead drop by hitting the bird with a slight halfway wrist flick?

Well basically. You're trying to make it look deception not just jump in the air and tap it. You want the smashing motion but then end it whatever kind of drop.

I believe there are two ways to do it:

    1. A little bit wrist flick (or simple "block", depend on the direction) instead of full arm swing. This way, the bird will travel much shorter (but, also much slower). Useful for if the opponent is way in the back or already off balance. However, need to make sure the bird just pass the net, otherwise, will be more like a setup.

    2. Do a slice. This way, bird will spin, changing direction while traveling shorter distance compare to power kill. This is more like a surprise to opponent, due to the bird will change direction during fly.
