Twelve nations will compete to lift the magnificent trophy, top-two teams of each sub-group 1 will advance into knock-out phase. Ten-time winner and title-holder China is still favourite to extend their supremacy in world mixed team championships. But some contenders pose dangerous threat and may ruin 11th title happy ending for the mighty China. Strengthened by two Olympic Champions, Chen Long and Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan also living legend Lin Dan, China also bring their upcoming players to feel team event atmosphere, Chen Qingchen, Zheng Siwei, Jia Yifan, Shi Yuqi, He Bingjiao, Chen Yufei. The defending champion will start their campaign against Hong Kong in first day tournament and tricky test will await them on Wednesday, the well-developed team Thailand who has opportunity to force top-seed work extra hard through former world champion Ratchanok Intanon and mixed doubles pair Puavaranukroh/Taerattanachai, thanks to this duo strong showing lately also Denmark Premier champion Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk as he shocked Chen Long in All England last sixteen recently. Former champion Korea has suprising line-up, many fresh faces will make their debut here. Their quest to repeat 1991, 1993 and 2003 successful story will rely on Son Wan Ho, Sung Ji Hyun and women's doubles combinations. Korea suffered terribly in men's doubles category post their formidable pairs retirement also mixed doubles as well. Stiff resistance in group-stage is expected coming from Chinese Taipei who will banking on world number one Tai Tzu Ying, the resurgent Chou Tien Chen and veteran Chen Hung Ling paired up with Wang Chi Lin. Last edition beaten finalist, Japan has advantage in women's category against their closest rival in group-stage, Malaysia who will be led by their iconic badminton hero Lee Chong Wei. The interesting tie JPN-MAS will determine their further progress in this event. Malaysia is favoured to secure two points through men's singles and mixed doubles, key factor of this clash is men's doubles between Rio silver medalists, Goh/Tan against current HKG Superseries champion Kamura/Sonoda. Sudirman Cup history can never be separated with Indonesia as the trophy named after PBSI founder **** Sudirman, ironically INA only topped podium once at 1989 inaugural edition. Red-white squad is drawn in tough group this time, European powerhouse Denmark and rising team India. Solid Danish team has good chance to top group D, only women's singles is their weakest link while Indonesia will see men's doubles as strongest department to contribute point in the absence of Olympic Champion Liliyana Natsir. Pusarla V. Sindhu will be Indian advantage against Denmark and Indonesian women's singles player. Today the most interesting should be KOR-RUS Korea, hit by retirement of many players would have the first test of their strength
HKG doesn't seem to be putting up their "strongest" line-up against CHN... looks like they are ceding 1 point to CHN and hoping to take a point from Thailand? I'd say that's a wise move... whether exposure/ experience-wise or strategically.
I watched the European Championships, they have definitely taken the place of Germany as the third strongest European nation in badminton behind Denmark and England-- definitely glad to see them in the Tier 1 competition of the Sudirman Cup. But what makes this group most interesting is how Korea and Taipei would cope with the Euro-style badminton (long rallies/ set-ups and wide coverage on account of their better reach) of the Russian team-- barring Ivanov/ Sozonov, of course (they can play fast and soft if they have to)
KOR is too strong for RUS WS surely for Sung Ji Hyun MS also goes to KOR, since RUS doesn't have prominent MS WD surely for KOR as well XD no reason RUS can take it over KOR RUS only get 1 category which surely dominant over KOR : MD Ivanov/Sozonov
There is a chance for an upset. Looking back at SC 2013, Germany beat Malaysia 3-2 by scoring upset in WD and XD.
Lin Dan sexiMasterclass in Gold Coast, fine wine performance of 21-14 21-13 over Hu Yun shall encourage Xia Xuanze for his further selection.
Most exciting match-up so far is Canada vs Scotland (2-2 at present, most matches decided in 3 games) because they are so evenly matched-- it's almost like watching 2nd-tier version of Europe playing vs Asia, with Canada fielding mostly ethnic Asian players.... Too bad, Canada is steam-rolling Scotland in the last WD match-- with Michelle Li playing WD after her WS, she is single-handedly turning the tide for Canada in 2 matches...
Defending champion China scored 4-1 against Hong Kong, they're still powerful with old guards but not invincible as previously. Their youngsters failed to fulfill the expectation in the leading situation, no wonder China fields vast experienced shuttlers in team event. Tang Chun Man/Tse Ying Suet denied China 5-0 perfect score, came back from behind lost tamely 10-21 at first game the nothing to lose HKG duo bounced back to overcome under pressure teenagers Zheng Siwei/Chen Qingchen. The Olympic Champion Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan delivered opening point for China despite they had trouble in second set to eliminate Law Cheuk Him/Lee Chun Hei. Sun Yu widen title-holder advantage to outclass lower-ranked Fan Ka Yan then badminton superstar Lin Dan secured China winning 3-0 to beat Hu Yun then followed by former world number one Bao Yixin/Tang Jinhua to outplay the inexperience Ng Tsz Yau/Yeung Nga Ting with two quick games. Evening session line-up (06.00pm) : - KOR v RUS (Court 1) MD, Kim Won Ho/Seo Seung Jae v Vladimir Ivanov/Ivan Sozonov WS, Sung Ji Hyun v Evgeniya Kosetskaya MS, Jeon Hyeok Jin v Sergey Sirant WD, Jung Kyung Eun/Kim Ha Na v Ekaterina Bolotova/Alina Devlatova XD, Choi Sol Gyu/Chae Yoo Jung v Evgenij Dremin/Evgenia Dimova *Team Russia has good chance to lead 1-0 earlier through their ace, 2016 All England champion - JPN v GER (Court 2) MD, Takeshi Kamura/Keigo Sonoda v Mark Lamsfuss/Marvin Emil Seidel WS, Nozomi Okuhara v Yvonne Li MS, Kenta Nishimoto v Marc Zwiebler WD, Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi v Linda Efler/Lara Kaepplein XD, Kenta Kazuno/Ayane Kurihara v Mark Lamsfuss/Isabel Herttrich *Marc Zwiebler is potential to steal the show against Kenta Nishimoto
Shocking : Chen Qingchen/ Sewei Zheng suffer an embarrassing defeat to Hong Kong's fringe pair in the Sudirman Cup. @Justin L may want to introspect the outcome.
RUS has put up their "No.1" line-up (yes, including their rookie MS, XDs, etc.-- Russia has also had a "changing of the guard")-- they are going for Korea and not "saving" themselves for Taipei... did I mention they were 2017 European mixed team silver medalists? I don't think they hope/ plan to get 1 point from Korea-- if they did, they would gamble on their WD & MD doing double duty in XD and force a change in play-order like they did in the European Mix Team Championships... they simply want/ need to have the match-difference in their favour for scoring/ ranking purposes when/ if it comes to a matter of match-dfference vs Taipei...
Last year I thought they are the next big thing! They seemed almost unbeatable by any pair. And suddenly everyone is beating them of late.
Nothing much to say, they are still going through a rough patch, finding their footing again before advancing further. Time will tell, age is on their side.
Nothing much to say, they are still going through a rough ,more of an uneven, patch lately, finding their footing again before advancing further. Time will tell, age is on their side.
I don't think that's a good idea, no matter what Korea is going through currently they are still too strong for Russia, instead they should've gone all out against TPE double duties and all. Trying to get points from doubles.
