100th All England more prestigious than Olympic Gold?

Seems after winning AE, LCW had to attend many functions...( just read Star.com)
I remember Rexy once said, "one you step down from podium..you are Ex-champion..you have to train harder..as people will target you."
I hope LCW realizes that many more important evenst are up against him..sigh!!!

IMHO, LCW's Olympic silver is far more prestigious than his AE title. Granted, pride in our sport is compelling me to say that WC and AE are more prestigious than a multi-sport festival that has us begging for inclusion. But I have to say it as it is, Olympics is far more prestigious. We are on our knees to IOC for a reason.

I believe prestige can be measured within ourselves. If the masses think something is prestigious, it becomes prestigious. If everyone thinks the OG is a pile of s**t, it is a pile of s**t (metaphorically). It everyone wakes up and thinks that Microsoft stock is worthless, it becomes worthless.

So, the best measure of prestige is the level of competition in which individuals/teams fight for it, and the level of passion shown by the audience. With this measure, there is no doubt that the OG far outpaces the AE.

I guess you are right. Note LCW's reaction upon winning his semi-final match against Lee Hyun-il in the Olympics compared to winning the AE against Tago Kenichi. ;)

I did not read any of the Msian newspapers, in English or malay that quoted Misbun as saying that. Misquote perhaps? or reporter misunderstood what Misbun said.
Interviews with Misbun is more on : 2 of Misbun's students won AE, Hafiz & LCW, Misbun is happy LCW finally won a major title, LCW is even more a target now & must raise his game.

Dont base on 1 article but a few.

Coach Misbun Sidek has described Lee Chong Wei's Yonex All England title as more prestigious than winning an Olympic gold medal.

"You are talking about a tournament that is 100 years old...a tournament that every player wants to win and be known as a All England champion. It is all the more prestigious than winning an Olympic gold medal," said Misbun.

What do you guys think about this statement?

Can you please repost this link. I can't seem to link properly. All I get is a single line of Japanese

Is this a joke? How can AE be much more prestigious than the Olympics? I'm from Canada, and let me tell you when we won the Olympic Gold medal in hockey against the US the whole nation was cheering... That game was the most watched sporting event in Canada and I think it was also very high in the US as well... You can ask any Canadian hockey player and they'll tell you winning the Olympic Gold is much better than winning the Stanley Cup!

I think you're wrong in this regard. Kids that grow up playing hockey have dreams of winning the Stanley Cup not Olympic gold. It's ingrained in our hockey culture. You must still have an Olympic hangover :D

Lol, I dunno, I remember reading somewhere about Sid the kid saying that was the highlight of his brief career... Add to it the disappointment of the last Olympic for our hockey team and this one is a classic... Maybe I should say Canadian hockey player on the Olympic team instead... And all the European players... :p

We're a little off topic so I'll keep this brief. Go to any hockey rink and watch the kids play, from the ones barely into skates to Major Junior. What are they playing for? To be in the NHL. Only a minute percentage make it and this privileged few work their butts off like slaves to help their team win the Stanley Cup. Remember, Canada only sent pros to the Olympics since 1998 so the their taste of Olympics is only a fraction of that of playing for the Stanley Cup. :)

Depends on how you look at it.

Case1
Badminton olympics- new sports -18years old but held every 4 years

All England-legendary -100 years old but is an annual event

Case2
AE Playing field-world class-every self-respecting top players will play there

Olympics-limited number of national players-max 2 per country per event except host nation, many shuttle-fodders from non-traditional countries like Africa, Latin America, Australia

Case3
All England-individual bragging rights + cash incentives

Olympics-national bragging rights + datukship (even for Silver)-Priceless

to answer the question of the OP, simple really.
could you swap an olympics gold medal with an AE title (100th or otherwsie)?
could you swap an olympics gold medal with 3 AE titles?
could you swap an olympics gold medal with 10 AE titles?

if the above are NO, NO, NO. there you are.

..i think the thread title should be renamed to simply:
Is the All England title more prestigious than the Olympic Gold?..

We've discussed this in a few other threads & are now just rehashing the same issue (comparing the value between the 2)..

Before OG 08...some members argued that winning more SS is more important or being ranked 1 is more important...( they even made points system and looked like winning OG is nothing..).things change when LD won OG 08..
As OG is limited to certain number of players....:rolleyes:
Even some were crying that not many CHN players are allowed to play in OG..thats why made SS tournament is more important but people forget the pressure of playing OLYMPIC is way much greater than SS...

Conclusion is that OG is way more pretigious than winning SS....
some even ridiculed TH's winning OG was a lucky one..cough...cough!!:cool:

every 4 years there are 48 SS t'ments (plus the 4 end of year prestigious SS Finals) and ONE olympics game. a no brainer really.

Yep...I think every player prefers to win OG than winning a bunch of SS..or WCs..
Limnited number of players in OG does not mean the winner is winning not competitively.....
People will remember the winner of OG...peole will not remember who will certain SS...may be the winner of AE 100 could be special because it can be part of Trivia of Badminton but not as much as OG...

..can you guys imagine Misbun actually saying this in front of Sir Taufik. As most if not all of us know, Sir Taufik is the only one left, out of the 4 Heavenly Badminton Kings, without the AE title...

LCW has 1 AE
PG has 1 AE
LD has 4 AEs
Taufik has................................................................2 AG titles...
