PETALING JAYA: The cards are set for Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan to battle it out in the Indonesian Open, which will be held in Jakarta from June 21-26.

And it will be the last tournament for Chong Wei to duke it out with Lin Dan before the world championships in London in August.

Chong Wei had made known that the Indonesian Open will be his last tournament prior to the world championships to enable him to peak at the right moment and to avoid injuries.

Top seed and defending champion Chong Wei will face Indone*sian Tommy Sugiarto in the first round. He has in his quarter seventh seed Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam.

In the same half of the draw are Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana and China’s Chen Long.

Chong Wei is in superb form at the moment and is tipped to reach the final to gun for a sixth title this year.

The 29-year-old has already won the Super Series Masters Finals, Malaysia Open, All-England, India Open and the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold.

His only defeat this year was by Lin Dan at the South Korea Open in January.

Lin Dan is drawn in the bottom half of the draw with team-mates Chen Jin and Bao Chunlai, Indonesian star Taufik Hidayat and Danish veteran Peter Gade Christensen. He will open his campaign against India’s P. Kashyap in the first round.

The other Malaysian men’s singles entries are national elite shuttler Liew Daren and KLRC’s Mohd Hafiz Hashim.

However, both of them have to play two rounds of qualifying to earn a place in the main draw.

Malaysia will have four men’s pair in the fray – Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How, Ong Soon Hock-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari and KLRC’s GanTeik Chai-Tan Bin Shen.

Except for Kien Keat-Boon Heong, none of the other pairs are expected to make much impact in a tournament that has attracted most of the top 10 pairs in the world, among them Danes Mathias Boe-Carsten Morgensen (No. 1), Koreans LeeYong-dae-Jung Jae-sung (No. 2), China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng (No. 3) and Indonesia’s Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan (No. 7).

Vita, Nova face tough start at Open

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Wed, 06/08/2011 7:00 AM

JAKARTA: Indonesia’s mixed doubles specialist Vita Marissa, who recently re-dueted with former world number one doubles specialist Nova Widianto, is facing a tough opening call at the upcoming Indonesia Open Superseries Premier from June 21-26 in Jakarta.

Unseeded in the event and currently climbing to world number 40, Vita and Nova, who are also aiming to collect points for the London Olympics, will have to challenge world top and the tournament’s favorite seed Zhang Nan and Zhao of China.

“We still have to adjust to each other after seven years [of vacuum]. It is not so easy,” said Vita recently.

Meanwhile, world number seven men’s duo Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan (back from his injury), is expected to past unseeded Polish pair Adam Swalina and Michael Logosz in the opener. Nonethless, they are likely to have a quarterfinals clash against top seed Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen of Denmark.

In the men’s singles, hoping to break his six homeground winning records, world number three Taufik Hidayat, will likely have an early walk in the park as he will meet a qualifier player in the opener.

If he breezes through either Bao Chun Lai of China or Rajiv Ouseph of England in the second round, Taufik will face his best nemesis fifth seed Peter Gade of Denmark as early as the quarterfinals. — JP

    Indonesia Open In History-Part I

Jakarta - Within less than two weeks, Indonesia will host the grand event of badminton in the country. Djarum Indonesia Open Super Series Premier will be held on 21 to 26 June. Before we speculate who will win thousands of dollars prize, it is nothing wrong to glance for a moment about the history of this championship.

Indonesian Open initiated Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI), and was first held in 1982. This championship continues rolling until finally in 2007 Indonesia Open entry into the ranks of the super series, which was held in 12 countries.

Perhaps for those of you who just follow the Indonesia Open, knows the championship is only held in Jakarta. But you know, that this championship was held in eight cities, namely Samarinda (1990), Bandung (1991), Semarang (1992), Yogyakarta (1994), Denpasar (1999), Surabaya (2002) and Batam (2003).

Ardy B Wiranata won the most title (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995 and 1997) and Taufik Hidayat, who both collected six titles. Taufik who successfully champion in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2006 still have a chance to be a winning title after he was ever going to compete in this year. Taufik reach the finals in 2010 and then, but unfortunately his step was stopped by Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the classic duel.

Indonesia's record in the tournament which was held in this homeland was fairly sweet, Indonesia managed to sweep clean all the titles in 1983, 1996, 1997, and 2001. Indonesia also recorded 79 winning titles throughout its implementation, followed by China who collected 30 titles and 10 fordegrees South Korea. However, in the last two years Indonesia has always bite the fingers, aka do not get any title, could Indonesia back to the highest podium? Ayo Indonesia, We Believe!

Indonesia Open In History - Part II

Jakarta - A few days ago, www.djarumbadminton.com discuss a bit about the history of the Indonesia Open from starting its implementation in 1982 ago. Now, we dig deeper into the championship which is now labeled super series premiere this time.

In 2010, Djarum Indonesia Open (DIO) Super Series to give a surprise to visitors. Committee conjure the Istora's yard (Sports Palace) which located in Gelora Bung Karno complex(GBK), into a city called City of badminton. This is the first time yard where held the super series is transformed into a place that provides all the needs of its visitors, ranging from food, fair food, drinks, and booth atm until games also there.

In 2010 also became the first year held a gala dinner with the nuance of Indonesia. Held at the Hotel Sultan, some athletes attended beautifully with nuance of Bali clothing. There Ardianti Fridasari and Maria Kristin Yulianti wearing Balinese woman traditional clothes, Anastassia Ruskikkh (Russia), Lee Hyo Jung (Korea) and several other athletes appeared with Balinese clothing, while Taufik Hidayat comes with the nuances of his birthplace, traditional Sundanese. they also learn batik, play angklung together.

In addition to events outside the field for the first time this has happened, DIO also presents interesting battle in the field. In 2009 and 2010, Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia) and Saina Nehwal (India) won the champion, Mixed double pair from Korea Lee Yong Dae and Lee Hyo Jung, has never won at Istora, but Lee Yong Dae won number the men doubles title with Jung Jae Sung in 2009, while Lee Hyo Jung Kim Min Jung became the champions in 2010.

Robert Mateusiak / Nadiezda ZIeba be athletes from Europe who managed to become champion, after 9 years, European didnt get titles. Before them, Joanne Goode / Donna Kellogg (England) in the women's doubles number and Simon Archer / Joanne Goode (England) managed to become champion in 2000.

Indonesia does not seem like the right place for the European to compete, fanfare Istora always make them dither, not even sometimes makes them pissed off when playing against the host, and get the resistance from outside the field. Ayo Indonesia, it's time revived!

    Super Dan, Havent conquer Istora

Jakarta - Lin Dan badminton is one of the most feared athlete in the world. His title is complete enough, he began to be heard on the international scene after success in world junior champion in 2000 ago.

Lin Dan's early career was not as smooth as we thought, in the year 2001 to 2003 be the hard year for him . From many championships he only won 1 title it is Korea Open 2002. He also knocked tragically in the first round of the Indonesia Open 2003. In fact his last participation in the Indonesia Open 2009 , Lin Dan was eliminated in the hands of Chen Jin in the round of eight.

An early hard, did not make it flinch, entering into the age of 27, he has managed to become champion in all the prestigious championship. Starting from the All England (2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009), World Championships (2006, 2007, 2009), delivering China reach Thomas Cup, the Asian champion and Asian Games gold medal and also not miss the Olympic gold medal.

He himself was given the nickname as Super Dan by his fans with so many accomplishments that he achieved. Carrying the title he won 43 various championships, and had to settle for being the runner up 16 times.

Super Dan is actually directed to play the piano by his parents, but then he even played badminton and train until in 2001 he managed to get into the Chinese national team when he was 18 years old.

Lin is already known as beloved of Xie Xinfang (great players and and win the world championship), it turns out secretly that they already inaugurated their relationship and married on December 13, 2010 in Haizhu, Guanzhou.

Was this year, he will be able to occupy the highest podium at Istora and carve his name in the winning line of the Indonesia Open champion?
