Looking at overall 2018 BWF calendar, all elite shuttlers must be aware to select tournament they taking part otherwise injury problem will disrupt their performance. Three Super 500 tournaments are concentrated in one month (JANUARY) then quite period until MARCH (German 300, All England 1000). APRIL comprises Commonwealth Games & Continental Championships, continued by two Super 300 tourneys in Oceania region on early MAY, then major event, Thomas-Uber Cup Finals. JUNE & JULY will offer hectic schedule, started from MAS 750, INA 1000, THA 500, SIN 500, one week off then jumps to World Championships Next, a physically demanding route for Asian players in AUGUST-SEPTEMBER. XVIII Asian Games, less than two weeks they will hurry up to take part HSBC World Tour in East Asia, JPN 750, CHN 1000 and KOR 500 The remaining three months is normal, similar with previous Superseries schedule. OCTOBER => DEN 1000, FRA 750 NOVEMBER => CHN 750, HKG 500 DECEMBER => Guangzhou World Tour Finals For prominent shuttlers, at least 15 tournaments that should pay attention : HSBC BWF World Tour Finals (1) + Super 1000 (3) + Super 750 (5) + Super 500 (4 of 7) + Grade 1 team event (Thomas-Uber Cup) + Grade 1 individual event (World Championships). This is not good enough. Its already Claim injury in Viktor Axelsen. No good when WR1 has to miss AllEngland. it will be difficult for him to do well in June period. Difficult for tall players to recover.
If you add the Badminton Asia Championships in April, that would be 18 must-attend tournaments in 2018! That's insane.
BWF really needs to think about the annual calendar carefully. - Thomas/Uber/Sudirman Cups often clash with UEFA Championship League Finals. (This happens almost every year) - Malaysia/Indonesia/Thailand Open 2018 clash with FIFA World Cup 2018.
You are kidding right? Thomas/Uber/Sudirman Cups are more prestigious than some clubs League Finals. However, FIFA World Cup 2018 now deserves the attention than MAS/INA/Thailand SS.
You can't avoid all the other sports out there. Whether it's football or rugby or pingpong, there's always something. Badminton has a tournament almost every week, so it would be an exercise in futility anyway.
The HSBC Guangzhou Ranking replaces Destination Dubai Ranking, just take a look at latest Guangzhou Race (per 8 February 2018), it’s raising eyebrow to witness many top players miss the top eight ranking and this temporary ranking position certainly doesn’t reflect the real strength of world badminton competition. Just wondering why BWF also includes World Super 300 tour (previously Grand Prix Gold) into Guangzhou Race? As we know most of top players often skip level 5 tournament and leaving second layer players to take part here. It will be much better if BWF follows Destination Dubai formula that counting point accumulation through top-tier tournament (current format are Super 1000, 750 and 500 = 15 tournaments). HSBC Race to Guangzhou comprises of 26 tournament (11 Super 300 + 7 Super 500 + 5 Super 750 + 3 Super 1000). Remember that the Super 100 also count. That means 37 tournaments in total, although no player could play more than a maximum of 33, since 4 weeks of the year involve Super 100s conflicting with other tournaments. Also, interestingly, several 'Top Committed Players' missed the first 3 Super 500 events and according to BWF rules will be fined if they don't play all 4 of the remaining ones. They are Sun Yu, Shiho TANAKA, Koharu YONEMOTO, Naoko FUKUMAN, Kurumi YONAO, Chris ADCOCK, Gabrielle ADCOCK, and Sapsiree TAERATTANACHAI, although 4 other players - Ricky Karanda Suwardi, Li Yinhui, Huang Yaqiong, and Chen Qingchen - played in Super 500 events but not in (both) the events they were in the top 10 in and it is unclear how the BWF will interpret the rule in those cases.
The BWF says it is: 'One other category of tournament, the BWF Tour Super 100 level, also offers BWF World Tour ranking points.' Call it contradictory, nonsensical, or stupid if you wish, but it is unambiguous. There is only one reason why they would mention on the 'World Tour' website that these events offer points.
Of course it is, or rather it should be. But Sun Yu, Sapsiree, and the Adcocks, who clearly have been suffering from injuries, are not shown in that specific way like Jorgensen so who knows? As far as I know, the BWF never makes public what players have been fined for missing SSP, etc. I just mentioned the list of the players the BWF said had to be there but weren't. I consider everything else to be behind the scenes.
I dont think in all circumstances, that BWF will fine player who miss 1 S1000 or S750. Players can just say they are tired. They can even miss 4/5 S500. Of course, for those who are injured, its not like they miss it on purpose even so why bother with the fine. Many gray areas but BWF will always give benefit of the doubt to players.
