29 November, 2018

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is excited to unveil 18 amazing hosts for upcoming Major Events across the next seven years – with the sport’s pinnacle tournaments headed to 11 Member Associations from four continents.

It is a landmark occasion for BWF as it endeavours to increase badminton’s global appeal and exposure in traditional and developing centres throughout the world.

The unprecedented decision to award 18 hosts in one bid process aligns with BWF’s vision to establish long-term targets to broaden its development initiatives and create a strategic position for the sport around new projects and partnerships.

...........................................

Final bids were presented at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in Malaysia, earlier today.

BWF Council Members listened to bid presentations from Member Associations for the 18 Major Events announced between 2019 and 2025.

Council decisions were based on all of the bids and recommendations made to Council following dialogues in the BWF Major Events Consultation Process.

All bids will now go into a second and final phase of evaluation where the last details of the bids will be clarified before contractual finalisation where, in some cases, the final bid city will be confirmed and then announced.

BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund added: “The process that BWF went through with all hosts has been a very productive and new experience but also left BWF with very difficult considerations on some very good and long-term bids. We feel that today’s outcome is good for the future of the sport.”

So it is gonna be 2020 and 2022 Tokyo, then also 2024 and 2025 Paris
and another TUC in Thailand in 2022

hmmmmm
I don't know how to feel about this...
Looks like badminton is lacking in place options to hold an event....

Thanks for providing this, really interesting and disappointed that the UK is not featured there (I know there is the annual All-England).
I wonder how strong a bid (if even a bid was made) by the English federation.

However, it is good to see some different locations on there to try to engage a greater diversity of audience; as we all know the challenges of promoting this great sport.

World champs have never been held in Tokyo nor Paris before. Neither have they hosted a TC/UC in the past.

Sudirman cup, world championships have been hosted in the UK previously. It is time for a Thomas/Uber Cup to be hosted in UK again.

It's good to see Spain doimg some events after the 2001 WC.

2010, Paris?
2006, Spain?

Regardless, it is interesting that World Championships have been held mostly in Europe
since 1990 actually....

Does it show the nature of the badminton enthusiasts in the countries?
Means they enjoy the game not because of the country, but because of the players....

If it didn't give them any (considerable) financial profit I doubt the countries would even consider holding a big event. More Asian players involved means more Asian supporters will come and visit. Kaching, kaching...:D:D

China hasn't selected the cities to host the major events. But, it doesn't matter as China can simply pick one of the cities to host the major events due to so many venues are ready for these. China has the most cities ready to host badminton tournaments. I think there are 10 or more cities for that.

As for Spain, it looks like Huelva city, CM's birthplace, is prioritized to host the major events.

Often wondered about this My theory is the name of Thomas Cup and Uber Cup holds much more significance in Asia across the general population. World championships is easily recognised across all populations and therefore marketing is much easier.

Hmmm, I don't think the name for these cups holds much more significance in Asia. Both G. A. Thomas and Betty Uber are from England. I can't believe that in Europe the name for these cups don't make much impact there.

Or maybe with TUC, since the countries have to send a whole bunch of players and staff to participate. Most of Asian countries are relatively much more affordable in terms of accommodations and living expenses. It would probably cost 4 or 5 times more if it was in any of Europe countries. I remember I almost fainted when I learned how much things cost in Switzerland lol

No. I just find it hard to believe.
Hypothetical scenario (I am just making it up):

Which one sounds more intuitive to a layman?

“Michael White cup” versus “world darts team championship”

The second one explains the information everything to a layman. Giving a name to a cup doesn’t explain anything to a layman.

In Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the name Thomas/Uber Cup is widely known in the general population. Badminton is not as well known across Europe amongst the general population so most people don’t know what Thomas/Uber Cup is. Plus, Denmark is the only European country to have won the TC and Denmark has a population of just under six million. Although Danish people know it, that’s only a small part of the European population.
